The BIG Picture Huntsville

The BIG Picture Huntsville Our Study, Vision & Plan for the City of Huntsville, Alabama. Welcome to The BIG Picture: Our Study, Vision & Plan for the City of Huntsville!

The City of Huntsville is developing a new comprehensive master plan — The BIG Picture – to help direct the future of economic growth, neighborhood redevelopment, parks and greenways, transportation, and quality of life for all of our citizens. Throughout the 2014 and 2015 calendar years, The BIG Picture will develop in three phases:

1. Our Study – Providing research, demographics and economic da

ta to determine who we are and how we compare with other cities across the nation.

2. Our Vision – Engaging citizens in a variety of workshops, lectures and online forums about their ideas, dreams and desires for a better and sustainable Huntsville.

3. Our Plan – Formulating a transparent, breathable plan with the ability to guide funding and policy decisions. This plan will be continuously updated each year to best reflect changing conditions. OUR STUDY

From May 2014 to May 2015, the City of Huntsville Planning Division has been working with Market + Main (www.marketandmain.net), a collaborative city planning consulting company based in Atlanta, on the research for the “Study” phase of the comprehensive plan. We’ve been gathering data, crunching numbers, creating maps and interviewing community leaders to get a better handle on current trends and to understand where Huntsville is positioned for the coming decades. This research will act as our foundation for our Vision and Plan phases of The BIG Picture. THE VISION

This is where you get to participate and be a part of the Big Picture! Click on the links below to learn more. Events- Come to a Citizens Academy, participate in a Focus Group, listen to a presentation as part of our Speaker Series… there are plenty of opportunities to join in the conversation. Citizens Academy- Attend one of our Citizens Academies, meetings focused on general topics like neighborhood redevelopment and transportation. These informal events will have featured speakers as well as activities like “dot exercises” that help gauge citizen opinion on various issues. Focus Groups- These smaller groups will recommend policies and actions to be included in the Comprehensive Plan. Anyone interested in one or more of the focus group topics is welcome to sign up. Presentations- Miss one of our events? Check out some of the presentations from our past events. Imagine Huntsville- the City of Huntsville’s crowd sourced site for citizens to post their ideas and “like” or “dislike” ideas posted by others. Now retooled for the Big Picture. THE PLAN

In summer 2015, we will begin writing the Plan. The draft document will be presented for public input and the final product will be posted online. The BIG Picture is designed to be a breathable plan that evolves to accommodate the City's needs within the Vision outlined by our citizens.

***Deadline extended for Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council 2026-2027 applications***

The City of Huntsville is giving students a little extra time to apply for the 2026-2027 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC). The application deadline has been extended to Friday, May 1, at 10 p.m.

MYAC is a yearlong leadership and civic engagement program open to rising high school freshmen through seniors who live and attend school within Huntsville city limits.

Participants gain hands on experience with City operations, collaborate with civic leaders and help elevate youth perspectives in municipal decision making.

To be eligible, applicants must:
• Submit a completed application
• Include at least one letter of recommendation
• Provide an official or unofficial transcript verifying cumulative GPA
• Obtain parent/guardian consent if under age 18

Multicultural Affairs Director Dr. Randy Barbour, Jr. encourages students to take advantage of the extended deadline.

“This program empowers young people to learn how their city works and to meaningfully shape the community around them,” Barbour said. “We hope this additional time allows even more students to apply.”

Huntsville’s music community invited to Tip Top Cafe for first Quarterly Meetup of 2026

The Huntsville Music Office is hosting its first Quarterly Music Meetup of 2026 on Tuesday, March 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the recently reopened Tip Top Cafe, located at 125 Maple Avenue NW.
The free community event will bring together artists, venue operators, creative professionals, industry stakeholders and music fans for networking, collaboration and updates on the Huntsville Music Office’s initiatives planned for 2026.

“2025 was a record-breaking year for the Huntsville Music Office,” said Huntsville Music Officer Matt Mandrella. “In 2026, we’re focused on refining and expanding the programs and events that have helped strengthen Huntsville’s music ecosystem including initiatives like our Music Ambassador Program and the 805 After Five concert series.”

The meetup will also offer attendees a chance to experience the newly revived Tip Top Cafe. After more than two decades of silence, the historic venue reopened in late 2025 following extensive renovations. Long known as a gathering place for generations of local musicians and touring acts, Tip Top’s return adds another meaningful chapter to Huntsville’s evolving music story.

“If you haven’t been to the Tip Top yet, this is a great opportunity to see how the owners have modernized the space while staying true to the venue’s roots and the nostalgia that longtime fans remember,” Mandrella said.

Community members are encouraged to attend, connect with fellow music advocates and contribute to the ongoing conversation shaping Huntsville’s growing music scene.

Refreshments will be available for purchase, and admission to the meetup is free.

"Historic Preservation’s economic impact is often overlooked. Not only can it increase property values as it preserves historic buildings and revitalizes neighborhoods, but it can also increase tourism in an area and foster local businesses. This event will explore the many facets of historic preservation from economic development programs, place making, and building construction, which supports economic growth, spur more investments, and enhance quality of life."
