Join us on Thursday March 23 @ 7:30 PM in WIL 168 for Dr. Jennifer Ramsay's talk: “Petra's Forgotten Past: Uncovering the Iron Age Foundations of Nabataean Society." The Nabataeans flourished in northern Arabia and the southern Levant from the 4th century BCE to the 2nd century CE, transforming from nomadic groups into a sophisticated society that controlled key desert trade routes. While Petra became their renowned capital, its earlier Iron Age foundations remain poorly understood, particularly during the 6th–4th centuries BCE when the region was part of the Achaemenid provincial system. This talk examines archaeological and art historical evidence, from funerary traditions to political and economic practices, to explore how cultural developments between 800 BCE and 200 CE shaped Petra’s cultural landscape.

Thanks to all who made UAH Humanities Week a success! We hosted Dr. Ed Pavlic (Univ of Georgia) for a wonderful plenary lecture on American author James Baldwin. We also welcomed guests Chris Hoff and Sam Harnett from The World According to Sound, for student talks and workshops, as well as a great live show. We launched the Interdisciplinary Studies Major with help from Eminent Scholar Dr. Gray Kocchar-Lindgren, we witnessed riveting talks from our own Humanities faculty--Dr. Nick Jones, Dr. Nicole Pacino, Dr. Lillian Joyce, Dr. Eric Smith, and Dr. Alanna Frost--about their research, and we had a great career round-table for majors in the UAH College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
