This week, we recognize the dedicated men and women who answer the call when others are facing some of their hardest moments.

EMS is more than lights, sirens, and uniforms. It is long shifts, difficult calls, quiet compassion, and the ability to stay calm when everything around you is not.

We especially want to thank our local EMS agency, Huntsville Emergency Medical Services, Inc. (HEMSI) here in Madison County. It is truly a pleasure to work alongside such skilled, dedicated, and compassionate professionals.

To every EMS responder, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to our community.

Your work matters, your impact is felt, and your dedication does not go unnoticed.

Member Spotlight: Laura Andrews

Laura Andrews first joined the squad in 1997 while also serving as an Urban Responder with HEMSI from 1997–2008, earning Responder of the Year in 1998.

Her passion for EMS began after surviving a near-fatal car accident on Bankhead Parkway in 1992. The squad extricated her from the wreck, an experience that forever changed the course of her life. Although her injuries forced her to give up her dream of becoming a corrections officer at the time, she found a new calling in the medical field and dedicated the next 34 years to helping others.

For Laura, serving others is more than a job — it’s her purpose. The squad has always been family, built on sacrifice, service, and a commitment to putting the community first.

In an incredible full-circle moment, the squad once again came to Laura’s aid in 2023 after a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver on Research Park. Squad members Paul Crawford and Michael Noerr extricated her from the vehicle, marking the second time in her life the squad had rescued her.

Despite every obstacle, Laura never gave up on her dream. In April 2024, she proudly became a Correctional Security Guard Senior with ADOC — now serving as a badged and sworn officer.
We are proud to recognize Laura’s dedication, resilience, and lifelong commitment to serving others.

April 27 – A Day We Will Never Forget

Today, we pause to remember the devastating tornado outbreak of April 27, 2011—a day that forever changed our community and tested the strength, resilience, and unity of Madison County.

In the aftermath of the storms, the Huntsville-Madison County Rescue Squad stood shoulder to shoulder with our public safety partners, responding to widespread destruction, searching through debris, assisting survivors, and bringing hope in the darkest of hours. The scenes were overwhelming—homes reduced to rubble, lives disrupted, and entire neighborhoods forever altered.

But through it all, we witnessed something just as powerful: neighbors helping neighbors, strangers becoming family, and a community refusing to give up.

These photos serve as a reminder of both the destruction we faced and the determination that carried us through.

We honor the lives lost, the survivors who continue to rebuild, and every responder who answered the call without hesitation.

We will never forget. We will always be ready.
