Our SWAT Team stayed busy this past week, splitting into two groups and tackling two completely different missions. One group spent the day on the range with a local company that won a “Range Day with SWAT” raffle. Everyone had a great time, learned a lot, and most importantly, enjoyed a safe day alongside some of our tactical operators.

The rest of the team spent a day at Monrovia Middle School training with the Monrovia Volunteer Fire Department’s Rescue Task Force. This training focused on getting medical personnel into a mass casualty scene as quickly and safely as possible, working closely behind law enforcement officers as they clear and secure the area. The members of Monrovia VFD demonstrated a tremendous amount of courage and commitment during this training. These are the types of partnerships and training opportunities that help ensure we’re prepared when our community needs us most.

Whether it’s training on the range, working with our public safety partners, or preparing for situations we hope never happen, our SWAT Team remains committed to being ready when called upon.

We would like to recognize Deputy Chris Cahoon for his dedication to the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Over the past several months, Chris has spent countless hours helping coordinate Torch Run events across North Alabama while working alongside law enforcement officers from agencies throughout the region. His commitment to this cause recently took him to Troy, Alabama, where he represented the Madison County Sheriff’s Office during the State Summer Games and participated in the Opening Ceremonies.

From helping light the Torch of Hope on the Madison County Courthouse Square to walking alongside athletes in Troy, Chris has been involved every step of the way. His efforts, along with those of many other law enforcement officers across Alabama, help support an organization that provides incredible opportunities for Special Olympics athletes.

We appreciate Chris for the time, effort, and dedication he has invested in this year’s Torch Run and for representing the Madison County Sheriff’s Office so well throughout the journey.

Early this morning, we participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Alabama Special Olympics. Law enforcement officers from across the state gathered in downtown Huntsville this morning as the first leg of the statewide torch run began. Sheriff Kevin Turner welcomed participants, met with members of the media, and thanked the officers, volunteers, and supporters who make this incredible event possible each year. Throughout the day, counties and municipalities across Alabama hosted their own torch runs as the Flame of Hope continues its journey to Troy for the Alabama Special Olympics Summer Games.

“The Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of the finest traditions in law enforcement,” said Sheriff Kevin Turner. “It allows us to come together and support some truly remarkable athletes who inspire us with their determination and spirit. I want to thank every officer, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter who helped make today a success. The impact of this event extends far beyond today’s run, and I’m proud to be part of something that makes such a difference in the lives of Special Olympics athletes across Alabama.”

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Ted’s Bar-B-Q, Ward Scott Morris Architecture Ward, Chick-fil-A Town Madison, The Duchess Bakery in Cullman, Starbucks, and Publix for their generous support of today’s event. A special thank you as well to Huntsville Parks and Recreation for providing tables, coolers, and logistical assistance that helped make the morning a tremendous success.

Events like this showcase the very best of law enforcement and our communities coming together for a common purpose. We are honored to support Special Olympics athletes and grateful to the many businesses, organizations, and individuals who helped make today possible. 🇺🇸

Nineteen years ago today, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office lost Investigator Breck Mullins following a courageous battle with cancer. Breck was a respected investigator, trusted friend, devoted family man, and a true professional who left a lasting impact on this agency and everyone who knew him. Today, we simply pause to remember Breck and let his family know that he has not been forgotten. His legacy continues to live on within the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

Gone, but never forgotten. 🇺🇸

Community Policing at its Finest..

Today, Deputy Christopher Todd took the time to visit with children in New Market this afternoon, exemplifying that the role of law enforcement extends far beyond responding to calls and generating reports; it is also about fostering relationships, establishing trust, and maintaining a presence within the community we serve. Moments like this are truly impactful.
This embodies the essence of law enforcement in Madison County.

Tonight’s Madison County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Academy was truly something special as we highlighted one of the finest School Resource Officer programs in the state. A huge thank you to SRO Deputies Sonya Massey and Justin Patterson, along with SRO Sergeant Andrew Lancaster, for doing an outstanding job speaking to our Citizens’ Academy members and giving them a firsthand look into the daily responsibilities, relationships, and commitment it takes to serve inside Madison County Schools every single day.

Our SROs are far more than deputies assigned to campuses. They are mentors, protectors, role models, counselors, and trusted faces to thousands of students and faculty members across Madison County.

We were also honored to have Dr. Mark Minskey, Chief Operations Officer for Madison County Schools, join us to speak about the partnership between the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Madison County Schools, a partnership built on trust, communication, preparedness, and a shared commitment to student safety and success.

Members of the Citizens’ Academy also had the opportunity to ask questions during an engaging Q&A session, allowing them to gain even more insight into school safety, the role of SROs, and the strong working relationship between our agency and Madison County Schools.

“Programs like our Citizens’ Academy are extremely important because they give our community a firsthand look into the professionalism, dedication, and hard work our employees provide every single day. I’m very thankful for the men and women of this agency who continue to serve with pride, integrity, and a genuine commitment to this community.” — Sheriff Kevin Turner

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it’s a time to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our country and our freedoms. We honor those heroes and the families who continue to carry their memory forward. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. As you spend time with loved ones this Memorial Day, please take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and pray for those who have served and sacrificed for all of us.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Last night, law enforcement officers, families, and members of the community gathered at the Jaycee Building for the annual Fraternal Order of Police Law Enforcement Memorial Service. The evening was dedicated to remembering the 26 officers from across Madison County who gave their lives in the line of duty dating back to 1880. Their sacrifice and service to this community will never be forgotten.

Events like this are always a reminder that behind every badge is a person willing to answer the call no matter the danger or circumstances. We remember those we have lost, we pray for the families they left behind, and we continue honoring their memory through our service each day.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to the Fraternal Order of Police for continuing to keep the memory of our fallen heroes alive. 🇺🇸

Last night marked the 8th week of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Academy, and class members had the opportunity to see firsthand how our SWAT Team and Training Division prepare for some of the most critical situations law enforcement can face. A special thank you to Sergeant Mitchell Nicholas, Deputy Chad Bryant, Deputy Blake Adams, Deputy Roy Agnew, Deputy Shannon Young, Detective Ben Stanger, Deputy Bailey Jordan, and Deputy Leo McCall for taking the time to speak with our class and for providing an outstanding, hands-on learning experience.

Academy member’s were introduced to the world of virtual reality training through realistic, scenario-based exercises that placed them into real-life law enforcement situations, giving them a better understanding of the split-second decision making our deputies encounter in the field. They also had the opportunity to see the BearCat Lenco armored vehicle up close, see specialized equipment used by our team, and even experience firing a less than lethal 40mm launcher under the supervision of our instructors.

Members also heard from our Training Advisors about everything that goes into the selection and preparation process of a newly hired recruit, from hiring standards and background investigations to academy preparation and field training. In addition, they discussed the extensive ongoing training our deputies complete throughout the year to maintain certifications, sharpen skills, and remain prepared to serve and protect the citizens of Madison County at the highest level.

We appreciate the continued engagement shown by our class members throughout this program and thank them for taking the time to learn more about the mission of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. 🇺🇸

MAY 18, 2026

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Deputy Sonya Massey has been recognized by the Alabama Association of School Resource Officers (TAASRO) after earning the prestigious School Safety Specialist Certification.

The TAASRO School Safety Specialist Certification recognizes School Resource Officers who demonstrate exceptional commitment, training, and experience in school safety. We are extremely proud of her.”

The award was presented to Deputy Massey today by TAASRO Region 1 Director and Hartselle School Resource Officer Zeke Eubanks at Sparkman High School, where she proudly serves as a School Resource Officer. Deputy Massey will also be formally recognized during the upcoming TAASRO conference later this month.
