Jeffrey Porter assumed leadership of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s Transformation Integration Directorate-Army Golden Dome for America, the Army’s centralized office for strategic missile defense capability development, during a May 20 change of charter ceremony. Leaders praised the directorate’s role in advancing air and missile defense systems to support homeland security and modern combat operations as global threats continue to evolve.

New Blue Origin employee Jake Helvey hit a three-run inside-the-park home run and drove in five runs to help the Blue Diamonds defeat the Base Invaders 21-15 in Marshall’s coed softball league on May 19. Helvey said joining the team after moving to the area helped him connect with coworkers and settle into his new community.

After he started working with Blue Origin in January, Jake Helvey figured that joining one of the company’s coed softball teams would help him fit in.

Air Force Maj. Ashley Haug is returning to Redstone’s defending champion softball team as they prepare to face the North Alabama Rockets in the annual Armed Forces Celebration Community Softball Game on June 10 at Toyota Field. Haug, a lifelong sports enthusiast who plays first base or catcher, said the team feels even stronger this year as they aim to keep the Target Destroyed trophy at Redstone.

Retired Navy veteran Chris Phillips, a former Blue Angels aircraft maintainer and 2025 Veterans Advocate of the Year, has been appointed District I manager for the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, overseeing veterans service offices across 17 North Alabama counties. Phillips, who joined the department in 2019 after retiring from the Navy, will lead staffing, training and claims support efforts to help veterans and their families access benefits and services.

Redstone officials announced that the installation’s drinking water met all federal and state Safe Drinking Water Act standards in 2025 and remains safe for residents and employees to use. Most of the water supply came from Huntsville Utilities, with Redstone officials continuing to monitor water quality, educate the public on contaminants and encourage precautions related to lead exposure in plumbing systems.

Gavin Lawrence urged Americans at Huntsville’s Memorial Day ceremony to honor the 1.1 million fallen service members whose sacrifices have protected the nation’s freedom and to ensure their legacy is never forgotten.
