From the Mayor's Desk: "Huntington is buzzing this week with Heritage Days 2026 in full swing! This year’s festival has an extra spark as we mark our country’s historic 250th birthday. But if you ask me what truly makes this week special, it isn’t just the grand parade, the hot air balloons, the car shows, or the carnival – it’s all of us.

This week is a chance to pause our busy routines, catch up with old friends, and meet new neighbors. Whether you live on the edge of town or right downtown, these days bring us together into a series of shared experiences.

Check out the full schedule of events linked below in today's newsletter. The festivities kicked off earlier this week and run through Sunday evening. So lather on the sun block, grab your sunglasses and a hat and come enjoy a break from the normal routine. Keep your phone handy to grab memories but stay off it otherwise unless you’re trying to coordinate a meetup with your neighbors in the massive crowds.

I’ll be out there enjoying the weekend, and I hope to see you around!"

Which Huntington neighborhoods will “Root For Your Block (R4YB)”?

The rules for R4YB are simple: The part of town that has the most homes sign up for Oaktober wins! The prize includes 100 extra trees planted throughout your neighborhood to enjoy all the beauty and benefits of new trees, plus a neighborhood block party at the Huntington Drive-In.

R4YB is taking place alongside our Oaktober initiative to plant 500 new trees in Huntington. Both are funded by an American Forests Grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Oaktober planting zones are designated by the grant to focus on areas that need new trees the most, so not all addresses are eligible. Everyone interested in a free street tree in the right-of-way near their yard should still sign up, because other tree opportunities may be available outside the grant program.

From the Mayor's Desk: "Downtown Huntington is a key part of our community. It’s the center of our local business community, a gathering place for residents, and a destination for visitors and guests. We have a lot to be proud of, and the momentum we’re seeing downtown is exciting. At the same time, we know there are opportunities to build on that success and create an even more vibrant, welcoming and accessible downtown.

In the coming months, you’ll begin hearing more about the Downtown Streetscape & Utility Project. This city-led initiative is focused on modernizing aging infrastructure while enhancing the look, feel and functionality of downtown. There’s an existing need to reconstruct water, sewer, street and sidewalk infrastructure. As we meet that need, we’ll also explore streetscape improvements that will strengthen Downtown’s identity, improve safety and accessibility, and create an even better experience for residents, businesses and visitors.

We’re currently in the planning and design phase, working alongside our partners at Lochmueller Group and Taylor Siefker Williams Design Group to identify the best opportunities and investments for our community. Because plans are still being developed, no construction is anticipated before 2027, and only limited short-term repairs will be made in the meantime. When work does begin, it will be completed in phases to maintain access to downtown businesses throughout the project.

This is a long-term investment in Huntington’s future. By improving critical infrastructure and creating a more attractive, vibrant downtown, we’re laying the foundation for continued growth and success. Thank you for your partnership and support as we work together to shape Downtown’s next chapter."

Last October – aka “Oaktober” – Huntington planted 500 trees. This year, we’re gearing up to do it again!

More trees mean cleaner air, better stormwater management, more shade, cooler temperatures and energy savings.

City Forester Emily Hayes and Indiana University Climate Fellow Jordan Rogers are leading this year’s campaign. The first step is signing up if you’d like a free tree in the right-of-way near your yard: bit.ly/4vn5EhE

Oaktober is funded through an American Forests Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Because of grant requirements, not all addresses are eligible. However, everyone is encouraged to sign up, as additional tree opportunities may be available outside the grant program.

And there’s more to come. Stay tuned for details on our new “Root For Your Block” contest to help bring even more trees to Huntington neighborhoods.

From the Mayor's Desk: "One of the team’s top goals is to leave Huntington better than we found it for future generations. That commitment is reflected in many of the projects and initiatives happening across our community each day – from the Tipton Street sewer project that will help keep our rivers cleaner and safer, to economic development efforts like Riverfork West Industrial Park and support for grassroots work to restore a grocery store on the south side. It also includes investments in public safety, such as building a new fire station to improve response times and better protect the health and safety of our firefighters.

Two stories in today’s newsletter highlight additional ways our community is creating opportunities for growth and connection while caring for the environment. One is our community gardens, launched last year to give residents a place to grow and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables. The other is the work of our new City Forester to establish a city tree nursery that will support Huntington’s urban canopy for years to come.

These are exciting initiatives, and I invite you to read on and learn more. Thank you, neighbors, and have a safe and relaxing weekend."

City offices will be closed this Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day. We’ll reopen on Tuesday morning. Thank you to all of the service men and women who have served our country well.

Because of the holiday, there will be no trash or recycling collection on Monday. All of GFL’s routes this week will be delayed by one day as a result.

Did you know? Huntington North’s Green Team and the City are partnering to create a city tree nursery near the Huntington County Community Learning Center at 2201 N. Jefferson St. Students will help care for the trees and manage the nursery, with the long-term goal of making it the primary source of trees planted throughout the city.

On Thursday, Green Team students and City Forester Emily Hayes began establishing the nursery’s first 500 trees. Rather than being planted directly in the ground, the trees are being grown in tubes with support structures that encourage healthy root production and make them easier to transplant to permanent locations in the future. This approach also makes it possible to operate a tree nursery on a scale that fits a community our size, without dedicating several acres to a traditional nursery operation.

From the Mayor's Desk: "Restoring grocery access on Huntington's south side is a key goal for our community. It's a complex challenge. Solving it requires wisdom, hard work, and humility.

First, I want to thank the board members of Southside Grocery Store LLC. This grassroots group of local residents formed in 2023. They are utilizing a locally-owned model that succeeded in other Indiana towns. They will share more in due time. In support of their efforts, City Council approved a $200,000 loan with my full support.

But let's be clear - the City will not own, operate, or manage the grocery store. Most funding will come from private capital raised by Southside Grocery Store LLC. That private share offering is an opportunity for any of us to share in the venture's risks and rewards. It will have to compete on its own merits. That said, it's a smart business plan that has a track record of success in other communities.

In the meantime, the LLC continue to move forward in their efforts. They won't be utilizing the City's loan until after a successful public share offering. If they don't hit their funding goals, the project won't be viable and the loan won't be drawn upon. This is a key safeguard for taxpayers. At last Monday's Board of Public Works & Safety meeting, I shared more about the project and the City’s role. Anyone interested can watch that discussion here: bit.ly/4dlc0Im."
