NYS Seal of Biliteracy Recipients Celebrated at Breakfast...

New York State Seal of Biliteracy recipients were celebrated at Huntington High School for a remarkable achievement during a special breakfast in the school library.

The event honored 49 graduating seniors who earned the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy in Italian, Spanish, Latin, French, and English—a record number of recipients for the program. The breakfast served as a celebration of the students’ years of dedication to language learning and cultural understanding.

Students gathered with their peers, teachers, and advisors to enjoy breakfast, socialize, and reflect on the hard work that led to this accomplishment. Throughout the event, recipients were recognized individually and presented with awards commemorating their achievement. Faculty advisors shared speeches highlighting the students’ commitment, perseverance, and passion for world languages.

The faculty advisors who worked with students include Nadine Araoz, Kristin Fortunato, Eileen Gonzalez, Lorena Hickey, Natalia Kopshti and Gina Trigian-Molvaut. School counselor Ivy Alvayero oversaw the entire process and program.

The New York State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and at least one additional language. Earning the seal requires significant academic achievement and serves as a testament to students’ communication skills and global awareness. Recipients will be recognized at graduation with a special New York State Seal of Biliteracy medal to wear with their cap and gown, and they will also receive a gold seal affixed to their diploma.

As the first event of its kind at Huntington High School, the Seal of Biliteracy breakfast marked the beginning of what organizers hope will become a cherished annual tradition. The celebration provided a meaningful opportunity to honor students’ accomplishments while highlighting the value of multilingualism and the important role world languages play in preparing students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

250th Semiquincentennial Citizenship Award Presented to Dana Saramago...

The New York State 250th Commemoration Commission is recognizing one graduating senior from each participating high school in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Huntington High School’s recipient is Dana Saramago for the work she did in her Advanced Placement Captone project, “which emphasized the accessibility of music appreciation among all learners, even those who don’t necessarily produce the music.”

Districts were asked to select a worthy graduating senior “who represents the ideals of the founding generation and the continued work to ensure all New Yorkers are fully enfranchised in the promise of our nation.”

Academically, Ms. Saramago’s grade average exceeds 100 for all of high school, which puts her near the very top of the Class of 2026.

“The key to my success has been diligence and drive,” Ms. Saramago said. “By committing myself entirely to both my studies and the activities I enjoy, I have found great success. I love performing in ensembles and exploring my creativity. I tend to learn better when stimulating the creative part of my brain. So, anything that includes something creative has helped me thrive. I am actively involved in athletics, academics and music.”

Captain of the winter and spring track and field teams and a member eight separate academic honor societies, Ms. Saramago also performs with the high school’s wind ensemble and jazz band. She’s been music teacher Andre Rizzuto’s intern for the junior band. She conducted the band at the spring concert.

Chairman of Social Studies, 7-12 Joseph Leavy and Huntington High School Principal Rochelle C. Brown presented the award to Ms. Saramago, who plans to study music education at LIU Post.

Jaipreet Singh Garners Edna Van Wart Math Award...

Jaipreet Singh seeks perfection in all of his academic pursuits and he comes awfully close to accomplishing that lofty goal. He would have been among the student favorites of Edna Van Wart, who worked as a Huntington High School mathematics teacher for 40 years.

Salutatorian of Huntington’s Class of 2026, Mr. Singh captured the Edna Van Wart Mathematics Award, presented annually to the high school’s top math student on the accelerated/advanced course level. The teenager plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall. He plans to study mechanical engineering.

“The key to my success has been always striving to improve and learning from the challenges I face,” Mr. Singh said. “Determination and perseverance have helped me push through obstacles and continue working towards my goals. I am also grateful for the support of my family, teachers, and mentors who have encouraged and guided me along the way. I have most enjoyed the opportunities to challenge myself academically and grow as a student.”

Miss Van Wart graduated from Barnard College in 1919. She taught for three years prior to coming to Huntington and beginning her teaching career in the district in 1922. She was on the faculty for the next four decades before retiring in June 1962. She passed away November 20, 1980.

In 1955, Miss Van Wart became the high school’s first chair of the mathematics department. She also served as senior class advisor for 14 years. Huntington High School’s 1946 and 1962 yearbooks are dedicated to the longtime district teacher.

“We regret her retirement,” said Principal Robert A. Cushman in remarks republished on page 121 of the 1962 edition of the Huntingtonian yearbook. “Over the span of forty years, Miss Van Wart has taught skillfully and well thousands of Huntington students. Her warm friendliness, loyal devotion and superior work have inspired and helped generations of students and faculty. We give her our best wishes with the full appreciation in our hearts of the privilege of having known and worked with her. We honor a great teacher.”

“Being involved in the Huntington Blue Devil marching band and Huntington Robotics has been especially meaningful, allowing me to collaborate with others, solve problems and be part of dedicated teams, Mr. Singh said. “Most importantly, I have valued the friendships and connections I've built with my classmates, teachers, and mentors along the way.”

Captain of the marching band’s drumline and a member of multiple academic honor societies. Mr. Singh has been a leader with the robotics team for the past four years, serving as captain as a junior and senior. He’s also won several awards in the Science Olympiad.

Woodhull School Hosts Successful Career Day...

Woodhull Intermediate School recently hosted another successful Career Day, providing students with the opportunity to learn from professionals representing a wide variety of careers and industries.

Throughout the day, students participated in interactive presentations, asked thoughtful questions, and gained valuable insight into the education, skills, and experiences needed for various career paths. Excitement filled the building as students explored new interests and discovered possibilities for their future.

Career Day featured presenters from fields including law enforcement, healthcare, business, education, engineering, technology, public service, and more. The event helped students make meaningful connections between their learning today and the opportunities available to them tomorrow.

“Woodhull is incredibly grateful to all of the presenters who generously shared their time, experiences, and expertise with our students,” Principal Stephanie Campbell said. “Career Day would not have been possible without the support of our families, community members, business professionals, and district administrators. Their willingness to inspire our students and broaden their understanding of the many paths available to them made this a truly memorable and meaningful experience.”

Ms. Campbell offered a “special thank you” to the “Woodhull Career Day Committee for the countless hours spent planning and organizing this fantastic event. Their dedication, attention to detail, and commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences helped make Career Day an engaging and inspiring day for our students.”

Bringing Fauvism to Photography at Huntington High School...

Huntington High School photography students recently explored the bold and expressive world of Fauvism, an early twentieth-century art movement known for its vivid colors, emotional intensity, and rejection of realistic representation. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck, students transformed their photographs into colorful works of art using Adobe Photoshop.

Fauvism emerged in France in the early 1900s and challenged traditional ideas about color. Rather than depicting the world as it appeared in reality, Fauvist artists used intense, often unrealistic colors to express emotion and create visual impact. Faces could be green, skies could be orange, and shadows could be bright purple. Color became a powerful tool for communication rather than simple observation.

To better understand the movement, students first examined famous Fauvist paintings, paying close attention to the artists' use of color, contrast, and brushwork. They discussed how color choices could influence mood and meaning, and how Fauvist artists prioritized expression over accuracy.

Using their own photographs as a starting point, Huntington students then applied Fauvist principles in Photoshop. Through selective color adjustments, saturation enhancements, gradient maps, digital painting techniques, and creative color overlays, they transformed ordinary portraits and landscapes into vibrant compositions reminiscent of Matisse and his contemporaries. Students experimented with unexpected color combinations and exaggerated hues, learning that artistic expression often requires taking creative risks.

“The project challenged students to think beyond traditional photography,” photography teacher Pamela Piffard said. “Instead of focusing solely on capturing reality, they explored how digital editing can be used as a form of artistic interpretation. By blending photography with the visual language of Fauvism, students gained a deeper appreciation for both historical art movements and contemporary digital tools.”

The final images demonstrate the enduring influence of Fauvism more than a century after its creation. “Through bold colors and imaginative editing, students discovered new ways to communicate ideas, emotions, and personal perspectives,” Ms. Piffard said. “Their work serves as a reminder that art is not always about reproducing what we see—it can also be about expressing how we feel.”

As Henri Matisse once revolutionized painting through his fearless use of color, today's photography students continue that spirit of experimentation, using modern technology to reinterpret a classic artistic movement for a new generation.”
