This week’s Local History Spotlight recalls when the infamous James Gang allegedly robbed The Huntington Bank just months after its opening. On September 6th, 1875, four men were involved in the robbery of $10,000 to $20,000. While the robbery is often attributed to Cole Younger and Frank James of the James Gang, there’s actually no solid evidence to confirm the validity of these claims. Only two of the four total robbers were identified during the length of an intense three day pursuit. Tom McDaniels was ultimately killed during a shoot out with authorities while Tom Webb was inevitably apprehended in Tennessee for his crimes. However, he offered no identity for the two other robbers. Association to the Missouri Based gang likely comes from the many similarities shared between the Huntington robbery and the other robberies that the infamous gang had performed across the nation. Most commonly argued by those who believe the robbery was performed by the James Gang is the fact that the robbery took place in broad daylight, which had become an undeniable staple for the crimes committed by the James Gang. However, many historians believe that this was done in an attempt to press blame towards the infamous gang, thus allowing the actual perpetrator a chance to completely avoid blame. Following this robbery, folklore claims that James had taken settlement in Wayne County and lived a relatively peaceful life under the alias of Frank Morris. While this claim falters when James’s other crimes are considered, many local individuals claim to be owners of Furniture supposedly made by James himself during his time in Cove Gap.

We’re disappointed to share that it has come to our attention that several panels along the Story Walk at Ritter Park have recently been vandalized.

The Story Walk is a wonderful partnership between Cabell County Public Library and the Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District, created to give children and families another fun, free way to enjoy reading together while spending time outdoors. A significant investment went into bringing the Story Walk to Ritter Park, and we’ve been so happy to hear the positive feedback from families who use and enjoy it. Our library staff also changes the featured story throughout the year so there is always something new to discover. 📚❤️

Unfortunately, when panels are intentionally damaged, those repairs and replacements come at a cost. Those are dollars that could otherwise help us maintain, improve, and hopefully one day expand projects like this into other parks and communities.

We’re simply asking for everyone’s help in taking care of something that belongs to all of us. Please be kind to our shared public spaces and encourage others to do the same. If you witness someone intentionally damaging or defacing public property, please report it to the appropriate authorities (police, parks, or library) rather than confronting them yourself.

We want to continue creating fun, free opportunities for families throughout our community, and we would love to see even more Story Walks in our parks someday. Help us take care of this one so we can keep dreaming about the next. ❤️📚🌳

You asked- we listened! Origami Club is now FRIDAYS from 4-5 PM! Start your weekends off with a fun fold and fabulous friends. As always, this club is Open to All ages and skill levels.
