πŸš’ Engine 2: A Look Back

Engine 2 entered service in Huntington in 1996.

To put that in perspective:

β€’ Bill Clinton was President of the United States.
β€’ The Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta.
β€’ Facebook, YouTube, and the iPhone did not exist.
β€’ Most of today's Huntington elementary school students would not be born for another decade or more.
β€’ Engine 2 has served the Town for nearly 30 years.

Over those three decades, Engine 2 has responded to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, storm damage, hazardous conditions, and mutual aid calls throughout the region.

The discussion is not whether Engine 2 still responds today. It does.

The discussion is whether the Town should begin the replacement process for a frontline fire engine that has faithfully served Huntington for three decades. Because modern fire apparatus commonly require 18–24 months or more from specification and ordering to delivery, planning must begin well before a vehicle reaches the end of its useful service life. Starting the process now helps ensure the department can continue providing reliable emergency response to the community in the years ahead.

πŸ’‘ Understanding the Proposed Debt Exclusion

One of the most common questions we've received is: "What is a debt exclusion, and what will it cost?"

The proposed replacement of Engine 2 would be funded through a debt exclusion under Proposition 2Β½.

A debt exclusion is different from a permanent override. It is tied only to a specific project and remains in place only while the borrowing is being repaid. Once the debt is paid off, the debt exclusion comes off the tax bills.

The current financing model assumes repayment over approximately five years.

Using current valuation data and planning estimates, the average annual impact for the average assessed home in Huntington ($319,171) is estimated to range from approximately:

β€’ $147 per year ($12/month) for a $650,000 project
β€’ $169 per year ($14/month) for a $750,000 project
β€’ $192 per year ($16/month) for an $850,000 project
β€’ $214 per year ($18/month) for a $950,000 project
β€’ $236 per year ($20/month) for a $1,000,050 project

These figures are estimates and may vary depending on final project cost, borrowing rates, and assessed valuations.

Residents will have the opportunity to discuss and vote on the proposed debt exclusion and Engine 2 replacement funding at:

πŸš’ What happens if Engine 2 becomes unavailable?

While it may look like an empty parking space, it represents something much more important: the loss of one of Huntington's frontline fire engines.

Engine 2 serves the Norwich Hill area and responds to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, EMS assists, and mutual aid incidents. If it were taken out of service due to a major mechanical failure or extended repairs, that area would rely on apparatus responding from Station 1.

Station 1 is nearly 6 miles from Station 2, with approximately 10 minutes of travel time between the two stations under normal conditions. That travel time does not include the time required for firefighters to respond to the station, gear up, start the apparatus, and get it on the road. In an emergency, every minute matters.

Today's fires also burn differently than they did decades ago. Modern homes contain significantly more synthetic materials and furnishings, which can contribute to faster fire growth and more rapidly changing fire conditions. This makes quick access to firefighting resources more important than ever.

Replacing a fire engine is not a quick process. Modern fire apparatus commonly require 18–24 months or more from specification and ordering to delivery. Planning ahead helps ensure the department can continue providing reliable emergency response without facing the challenges of an unexpected apparatus failure.

On Monday, June 1st at 6:30 PM, Huntington residents will have the opportunity to consider the Engine 2 replacement funding request at Annual Town Meeting. We encourage residents to attend, ask questions, review the information that has been shared, and participate in the discussion.

Thank you for taking the time to stay informed and engaged in the future of emergency services in our community.

Day 4 of the Massachusetts Fire & Life Safety Educator program being hosted by Huntington Fire at Gateway.

This course is about more than presentations and lesson plans. We are building the future fire and life safety educators for the communities we serve. It’s great to see so many departments investing in Community Risk Reduction and public education, including three members from Huntington Fire Department alone participating in this program.

Today focused on school partnerships, classroom environments, and how we communicate effectively with diverse audiences. A lot of valuable discussion and ideas that can be brought back to our communities to help make them safer.

The Huntington Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and members of the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department following the tragic line of duty death of Firefighter Andrew Cross.

We also keep the firefighters and civilians injured in this devastating lumber mill explosion and fire in our thoughts as they continue their recovery.

Incidents like this are a solemn reminder of the dangers firefighters face every time the tones drop. Across state lines and department patches, the fire service is one family.

Please keep the Cross family, the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department, and all of the responding agencies in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Rest easy, brother. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. πŸš’πŸ–€
