Since its inception in 1926, as a grassroots social service agency, the Huntington-based Family Service League has grown dramatically — achieving national accreditation and expanding its scope of influence and support throughout Long Island. Today, more than 50,000 individuals in need, fr

om newborns to centenarians, rely on the social safety net that Family Service League provides. Presently, our organization operates 50 social service programs in more than 20 locations, situated primarily in Suffolk County. Our tireless staff, numbering more than 600 professionals and support personnel, provides both physical and emotional aid to Long Island’s most vulnerable citizens. We give seniors companionship and purpose, we provide hope and protection for the homeless, we allay the fears and desperation of young adults consumed by addiction or mental illness, and we offer nourishment and shelter to the working poor facing insurmountable financial burdens. Most importantly, we strive to keep vulnerable families strong and supported. Our five Family Centers feature up to 20 distinct social services consolidated into one help center— enabling fragile families to take advantage of multiple, integrated services in a more efficient and cohesive way.

Last Friday, Dr. Jeff Steigman, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, was thrilled to present, along with our partners from OMH’s Diversion Center (Raquel Derrick, Ph.D. and Katheryne Pugliese, Ph.D.) at the 5th Annual National Conference on Police Social Work.

Discussion focused on FSL’s innovative work with Law Enforcement and OMH’s related research study that looks at law enforcement perceptions of behavioral health collaborations. Thank you to all involved!

Meet Linda 👋 One of our incredible donors, Linda makes it a priority to collect gently used clothing and give it a second life at one of our family shelters. Every item she donates is thoughtfully washed, folded, and labeled by size. It is then displayed with care so families can easily find what they need.

It’s more than just clothing...it’s confidence, comfort, and support for those going through a difficult time. If you or someone you know is in need of clothing, or if you’d like to donate, please reach out to [email protected] to get involved. 👚

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s an important reminder that mental health matters at every age including childhood. Helping children build emotional awareness and coping skills early in life can support resilience, confidence, and overall wellbeing as they grow. Simple tools like deep breathing, fidgeting, mindful walks, and learning to name emotions can make a meaningful difference.

At Family Service League, we are committed to supporting the mental health of children and families in our community through compassionate, accessible care.

To learn more about our mental health services, please reach out our main line 631-427-3700 or email [email protected].

Nilka from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women shared this powerful reminder during our Moving Forward workshop and it’s one that stays with you long after the conversation ends.

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, this message is a gentle nudge to give yourself permission to grow, reset, and move forward with clarity. Your past may shape you, but it does not define you.

Take it one day at a time and choose a mindset that allows you to move forward 💛 Help is always available if you need it! You are not alone.
