The northbound I-69 exit ramp at mile marker 286 will be closed due to a water-based adhesive spill.

Indiana Spill Response, Huntington County EMA, Markle Fire, and Markle Police are on scene. Mitigation actions are in place.

Huntington County Emergency Management would like to provide an update on the transition of the former Huntington County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit into Emergency Management.

A New Division of Emergency Management

The Traffic Unit will operate as an official division of Huntington County Emergency Management, expanding the agency’s responsibilities and operational capabilities.

The unit will use a designated numbering structure to maintain clear identification within the agency:

* 600: Emergency Management Director, Thomas Fuller
* 601: Emergency Management Deputy Director
* 640: Traffic Unit Lieutenant, Max Kaylor
* 641 and above: Traffic Unit members

This structure will help distinguish Traffic Unit personnel while maintaining consistency with Emergency Management’s existing organizational structure.

Cross-Training and Expanded Capabilities

Traffic Unit members will have opportunities to cross-train with other Emergency Management divisions. This will help build a more versatile team, strengthen coordination, and provide opportunities for personnel to support additional agency functions.

Fleet Expansion

As part of the transition, four older-model trucks previously assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit will be transferred to Emergency Management and rebranded to reflect their new assignment.

Adding these vehicles will expand Emergency Management’s fleet and provide additional resources as the agency takes on its expanded responsibilities.

Looking Ahead

This merger represents an important step forward for Huntington County Emergency Management. By bringing the Traffic Unit under the agency, we are expanding our capabilities, creating new cross-training opportunities, and building a more coordinated approach to supporting public safety throughout Huntington County.

Although the Traffic Unit is already operating under Emergency Management, we anticipate completing the remaining transition and rebranding efforts by January 2027.

We appreciate the continued support of our county leadership, public safety partners, and community as we move forward with this transition.

EMA Supports Structure Fire Response; Thanks Community for Assistance

Huntington County Emergency Management responded to the commercial structure fire at 238 Polk Street in Huntington on October 20, providing firefighter rehabilitation, public alerting, and traffic support.

EMA personnel supported firefighters with a rehabilitation area where they could rest, hydrate, and recover during firefighting operations. EMA also provided public alerts regarding the incident and assisted with traffic support through the EMA Traffic Unit.

Huntington County EMA extends a special thank-you to the businesses, organizations, and individuals who stepped forward to help:

JJ’s Gas Station for providing ice for firefighters.
Brick House Restaurant for donating multiple cases of water.
The Awakening Church for being on standby to provide shelter if needed.
Kari Harmon for providing snacks.

We also thank everyone else who donated supplies, offered assistance, or supported emergency personnel throughout the incident. Your generosity helped care for the responders working to protect our community.
