As ice and snow melt over the coming days and weeks, it will carry debris — leaves, sticks, trash, etc. — to catch basins. In turn, this will make it harder for ice and snow melt and rain water from entering the catch basins.

The Huntington Sanitary Board is asking for the public’s assistance in removing any debris that may cover the top of a catch basin grate in their neighborhood.

If you notice that a catch basin appears to be clogged below the grate, please do not attempt to remove the grate and clean it yourself. Instead, report it using the Huntington WV 311 app or on the Huntington WV 311 online portal here: https://cityofhuntington.com/huntington-wv-311.

The Sanitary Board will dispatch a crew to clean below the grate. Crews completed 329 cleanings from mid December to mid January.

I would like to address the rumor that the city is out of salt. We are very low but not out. 300 additional tons of salt have been ordered from our vender and waiting for delivery. In the meantime Public Works has borrowed 50 tons from the state, and will continue to do so until our order is delivered. Just last week 500 tons were used. To date this season we have used a total of 900 tons. In the past we average 900 tons for the entire season. We are not salting brick streets or flat streets… we worked all last week in the hills… salt doesn’t work at temps 20 or below. Snow plows can not break the ice up… where we have had ice build up in the hill sections, we are taking a back hoe or end loader to bust it up. Please understand this storm and the record lows of low temperatures for at least 7 consecutive days has been a nightmare for everyone and is unusual. The city and the public works department is doing its best. It could have been a lot worse meaning we could have all lost power, and still getting inches of snow like some states. I’m not trying to make light of the situation but just being thankful.

I know this winter storm has many people upset with the ice and conditions of the roads. I get it, mine is solid ice as well. Public works has been working 16 hour shifts for days. Many salts will not work when the temperatures are slow, I don’t fully understand it so I won’t pretend I do, but it has something to do with the chemical make up. When the ice is so thick the plows won’t phase that. Half the country is struggling the same way we are, many states have no power. I’m thankful I haven’t had any mention of residents of loosing power. What a blessing 🙏 Next week looks pretty nasty also, I do think the temperatures will rise a little bit, let’s pray for that. My recommendation don’t go out unless you have to, and if you do drive please leave earlier than normal so you can go slower and proceed with the upmost caution. Be cautious of the wild drivers who don’t obey the speed limits and try to be patient. This to shall pass.
Thank you

To all the residents of Guyandotte I want you to know I hear your concerns and your concerns are valid. I have had more calls, texts and messages than I can begin to count. I have not been able to reach everyone and I do apologize for that. I have talked with a lady in planning and zoning and was given the details from the letter that was sent out to residents within 400 feet of the proposed building site. Also I was told this will not be “if it is approved” section 8 housing but will be income based. The property would be managed by the developer who is in Lexington Ky. Another thing to mention it is my understanding that if it passes the first round it will have to go to another committee for consideration and will have to be rezoned. I encourage everyone that is available to attend the meeting on the 16th to speak, and if you are not able to attend for any reason, write your concerns down and bring them to city hall to be notorized. That will ensure your letter be read at the meeting in your absence. As I learn new information I will share it here on this page so I can hopefully reach everyone. Please share this post and let your neighbors know in case they don’t have Facebook.

Thank you
