The Town of Huntington Trail Challenge, which began on Family Earth Day, is a self-guided challenge to complete approximately 30 miles on any Town trails. To encourage resident participation, Supervisor Ed Smyth and the Town Board are highlighting Huntington's many walking, biking, and hiking trails.

The Northport Rail Trail was built in the 1800s to extend service from Syosset to Northport and was later abandoned as a result of geographic interference with further extension plans. Influenced by the Rails-to-Trails movement, the old railway was granted to the Town of Huntington by the Metropolitan Transit Authority by means of a 10-year license agreement for public trial purposes in 2008. The current trail lies in the rail corridor that leads from Laurel Hill Road to Elwood Road, with access on Orchard Court. Visitors may see a variety of birds, such as American crows, European starlings, and house sparrows.

Please visit huntingtonny.gov/trails-guide for more information on Huntington's trails.

Councilwomen Theresa Mari and Jennifer Hebert and the Town Board honored residents 15-year-old Jovani Moss and his mother, Natechia Campbell Moss, for their acts of heroism that saved the life of their neighbor.

On the morning of March 31, Jovani noticed that the house across the street was engulfed in flames. Instead of panicking, he informed his mother of the situation and then called 911, providing critical information to first responders. Natechia rushed across the street and forced entry into the home to alert the neighbor to the danger. Jovani remained on the phone with emergency services, refusing to leave for school until he was certain everyone was safe. His only concern later in the day was his neighbor's wellbeing.

Jovani and Natechia have demonstrated tremendous courage, compassion, and care for their neighbors, exemplifying the very best of Huntington. We thank them for their quick thinking and willingness to ensure the safety of their community, and are proud to honor them for their actions.

At yesterday's Town Board meeting, Supervisor Ed Smyth and the Town Board presented a street sign dedicating East 23rd Street between New York Avenue and Homecrest Avenue to Robert Tellefsen Street in memory of longtime Huntington resident and firefighter Robert "Bob" Tellefsen.

Bob was born and raised in Huntington and answered the call to serve his country in 1966 as a member of the US Army, stationed in South Korea. After his military service concluded, he returned to Huntington, where he served for 45 years as a volunteer firefighter with both the Huntington Fire Department and the Huntington Manor Fire Department. Bob was also an involved member of his community, holding lifetime membership to the VFW and spending 30 years with the Harbor Boating Club. Above all else, Bob was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

It is our hope that the ceremonial dedication of East 23rd Street will serve as a reminder of the importance of family and community to future generations of Huntington residents, and we are proud to honor Bob and his legacy.
