The annual Military and Veterans' Appreciation Picnic was held Saturday, May 30, at Huntington's Harris Riverfront Park, bringing together more than 1,000 attendees for a day of recognition, fellowship, and community support.

Cabell-Huntington Health Department is proud to participate in this special event each year. CHHD's Jodi Johnson, along with Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers Joe Reckard and Jan Gossett, provided blood pressure screenings and shared valuable health information with attendees from our Care-a-Van mobile unit.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our veterans, active-duty military members, and their families, and we thank everyone who helped make this year's event a success. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Cabell-Huntington Health Department conducted its May All-Staff Meeting this past Thursday, featuring an inspiring presentation from Marshall Health Network President and CEO, Scott Raynes.

A native of Oak Hill, West Virginia, Mr. Raynes shared his remarkable full-circle journey in healthcare leadership and his opportunity to return home to lead Marshall Health Network. He also provided an overview of exciting developments within the organization, along with important insight into some of the challenges facing today’s healthcare industry.

Staff also received several departmental updates during the meeting. Casey Napier highlighted the continued progress of our Health and Wellness Garden and upcoming June opportunities, while Tim Hazelett shared a thoughtful leadership lesson on what the Chick-fil-A cows and our department have in common.

We were also honored to hear reflections from our retiring Director of Nursing, Kathleen Napier, as she looked back on 29 years of dedicated service to our agency and community. We thank Kathleen for her incredible commitment to public health and wish her all the best in retirement!

More than 30 community members joined the Cabell-Huntington Health Department for our Community Threat Preparedness Summit at the Marie Redd Senior Center. The event brought together local first responders and emergency leaders to share valuable information on how residents can better prepare for emergencies and community threats.

Our outstanding panel included Tony Edwards from the National Weather Service; Ted Grant and Nazim Abbess from Cabell County 911/Emergency Management; Cabell County Sheriff Doug Adams; Cabell County EMS Director Veronica Swope; Huntington Fire Chief Greg Fuller; and Deputy Chief Brian Grieco. Panelists discussed the important work of their agencies and provided practical preparedness tips to help keep our community safe.

We appreciate our panelists, everyone who attended, and the Cabell County Community Services Organization (CCCSO) for helping make this important community event a success. Working together, we can improve preparedness and strengthen our community response capabilities.
