The Eastern United States is home to the Ruby-throated Hummingbird during mid-April through mid—September, when fall migration for Ruby throats begin.

These days we are happy anytime we see a hummingbird, and we have seen one today (September 13th), but we know it won’t be long before the one we see is the last one until next spring.

The males depart first, followed by the females, and lastly the juvenile Hummers take flight. They head south toward the Gulf Coast in Mexico and then onto Central America. Especially challenging for these little birds is the crossing over 500 miles of ocean at the Gulf of Mexico, a demanding and perilous journey. An amazing feat for a bird that weighs between two to six grams!

During the winter months, we are comforted by looking at Bob Spears carvings of a pair of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.

Dylan Gottlieb (.amber.gottlieb) has been our Conservation and Management Intern this summer following her sophomore year at the University of Vermont . Her goals included building skills in ecology and natural history, connecting community, and giving back to the place she has come to love.

Dylan completed a vegetation survey, using random plots and iNaturalist to assess what species are growing in the area where the proposed bridge and boardwalk will be installed.

Her work will be extended by monitoring the quantity and diversity of plants in the plots, identifying changes following the bridge installation. This also expands work by previous intern Rogan , who began surveying mammals on the museum property.

Dylan also continued her wood carving journey, enjoying both a one-day session and a three-day class. She maintained and improved several sections of trail, and (of course) has enjoyed being a birder here at the museum.

Thank you, Dylan, for all you added to the Museum and our community this summer!

The Birds of Vermont Museum welcomed Brenda Bouvier to our team this summer, as a Museum’s Education . Thank you, Brenda!

"I spent my time creating a new set of trail for the Discovery Trail, informing visitors about the relationships between humans, wildlife, and the forest. I also built a new fairy house ... continuing the fairy house project started by... Ev McIndoo (.mcindoo.art). I welcomed visitors, worked the gift shop, designed more posters and a puzzle, and learned about the daily operations of an independent, non-profit museum. It was an extremely informative and enjoyable summer spent at the museum!"

As a new graduate of Fordham University , with a particular interest in learning about the natural environment through visual arts, Brenda developed new communications materials and crafted , employing her creative skills and educational incentive to inform visitors while celebrating birds in Vermont and beyond. Check out the updated Discovery Trail signs she developed on your next visit to the museum.

We are grateful for all her hard work. Thank you Brenda and good luck with your future adventures!

Unfortunately, we need to postpone the September 6th, Butterfly program until the summer of 2027.

The good news is, it is possible we see this little guy again! Black Swallowtails spend between 10-30 days as caterpillars. After this stage, they go into a chrysalis and spend the winter transforming into an adult.

We have rescheduled the butterfly program until July 31, 2027, and we will be looking for Black Swallowtails!
