CPR Saves Lives.
A former EMT student at Cabell County wanted to share their experience with us and they gave us permission to share their story.
Here is the message our Training Director, Marsha Knight, received:
"Hi Marsha, I'm pretty sure you don't remember me. I took your EMT class at Cabell County EMS twice, probably 10 years ago. I never did become a paramedic or graduate from your class; my life took a different path. But I want to tell you that this past Saturday, what I paid to take your class was repaid 1000 fold and more. My 11 month old daughter drowned and was unconscious and not breathing, face down in our home pool. Even though it has been years since I took the class, I remembered CPR. I had my baby breathing in under a minute from pulling her out of the water... before I even had a chance to call 911. (My son was looking for my phone.) I was so emotional, I almost forgot CPR, but pulled through and did what I had to do for my daughter. Paramedics did not arrive until 5 minutes later, but I had her conscious and breathing again fast. She was airlifted to a Tampa hospital. Doctors kept her overnight and she did not require oxygen during her hospital stay. She made a full recovery with no neurological deficits. The doctor said it was a significant near-drowning injury and that I saved her life.
Thank you. Thank you for making it possible to still have my baby with me today, happy and healthy. If I hadn't done CPR, she would not be with me today. Just wanted you to know that although I did not become a paramedic, your class still mattered. It saved my daughter's life."
We are grateful to receive messages like this. We are grateful to be able to provide training that helps someone, even a decade later.
