The department operates from two stations, Bippus West on State Road 105 and Bippus East near the Dawn Lakes area, serving approximately 60 square miles across Warren and Clear Creek Townships in northwest Huntington County. In addition to serving their local coverage area, the department also assists neighboring departments, the Sheriff’s Department, and Emergency Management during emergencies and mutual aid responses.

The Place of Grace Transitional Housing Project continues to make strong progress, creating a supportive space for individuals and families recovering from substance abuse. This project reflects a commitment to strengthening the community by providing stable, transitional housing for those working toward long-term recovery and independence.

The Commissioners donated the land and served as the lead agency for a $750,000 grant through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs, helping bring this important initiative to life. The contractor has made substantial progress to date, and construction remains on track with an estimated completion in July.

The men and women of our Volunteer Fire Departments are the tip of the spear for public safety in rural America. Their commitment is especially critical today, as volunteers make up 62% of all firefighters in the United States, while the number of emergency calls has increased by 300% over the past few decades. At the same time, departments are facing an aging workforce, with 34% of volunteers now over the age of 50.

As part of an ongoing effort, and the first in a series highlighting Huntington County’s Volunteer Fire Departments, the Huntington County Commissioners are proud to recognize the Markle Volunteer Fire Department.

The department operates out of stations in the Town of Markle and the Town of Uniondale, providing fire protection and emergency response services to Union and Rock Creek Townships in both Huntington and Wells County. Through dedicated service, ongoing training, and rapid response, the Markle Fire Department plays a vital role in keeping its communities safe.

Department Leadership:
Fire Chief – Jon Gray
Assistant Chiefs – Mike Grant, Mike Cains
Captains – Scott Howell, David Brown, Erick Kahn
Lieutenants – Eric Pike, Gatlin Sunday, Zac Krinn
Safety Officer – Rick Weikel
Chaplain – Robert Gonser
