South Huntington students and staff throughout the district wore red, white, and blue today in recognition of the 25th anniversary of September 11th, 2001. We take this time to reflect upon the lives forever changed by these attacks and to honor the brave heroes and first responders who rushed toward danger, as well as the men and women in uniform who answered the call to protect our freedom, in the days and years following this tragic event. We thank the members of our community who continue to come together year after year to ensure that this day and the sacrifices made are never forgotten.

Stimson Middle School 7th and 8th graders came together for a moving and very visual 25th anniversary 9/11 commemoration. Over the past week, each student researched three to four people who died on September 11, 2001 so our school community could honor and remember all 2,977 lives lost.

Students walked a path lined with photos and their research detailing those stories before placing red, white, and blue carnations to form an American flag at Peter Nelson Park. The memorial park, located right next to Stimson, honors fallen FDNY hero, Walt Whitman High School alum (‘76), and Huntington Manor Fire Department Assistant Chief Peter Nelson. As a member of the FDNY, Nelson responded to the World Trade Center with Rescue Company 4 and was killed in the collapse. His family, now living outside New York, watched a live video feed of the remembrance.

We thank the Huntington Manor Fire Department for being a part of this special tribute by displaying a large American flag at the park during the solemn ceremony.

Principal Michael Duggan and other educators at the middle school hope that by connecting the individual stories, our community, and the broader events of September 11, our students will develop a deeper understanding of the tremendous loss, sacrifice, and heroism associated with that day.

The Walt Whitman High School community gathered for a solemn 9/11 remembrance ceremony this morning, marking 25 years since the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93.

Students born long after 2001 joined faculty, staff, school board members, local firefighters, and community members to honor all those lost, including seven members of our Wildcat family: five alumni, a district employee, and a South Huntington parent. Keynote Speaker, James Beck, South Huntington’s Head of Security and a former NYPD detective who was on duty on September 11, 2001, shared his story of rushing to Ground Zero with his partner to join search and rescue efforts.

During the ceremony, School Board President Nicholas Ciappetta unveiled plans for a permanent 9/11 memorial at Walt Whitman High School, which will feature World Trade Center steel donated by the Huntington Manor Fire Department. The memorial is expected to be unveiled sometime next spring.

Today the Huntington Manor Fire Department assisted WWHS in honoring the brave men and women who lost their lives on September 11th by hanging a large flag at the entranceway of the high school. We could not be more proud and appreciative of the volunteers of HMFD who always help our school and community.

Students in Mrs. Kurnicki’s Life Skills class at Stimson Middle School learned the story of “The Man in the Red Bandana” this week. Welles Crowther was a 24-year-old equities trader who became a hero during the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Wearing his signature red bandana, Welles helped guide many people to safety from the South Tower, repeatedly returning to help others despite the danger. He lost his life that day, but his courage, selflessness, and compassion continue to inspire people around the world. His story reminds us that true heroes are those who put the lives of others before their own. Earlier this week, Welles Crowther was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Whitman’s Boys Varsity Soccer Team edged North Babylon with a 4-3 win in overtime yesterday. Michael Caiazzo slammed home a rebound off a shot by Will Villatoro to lift the Wildcats to victory. Caiazzo finished with 2 goals. Luis Jandres had a goal and an assist. Lucas Flores added 2 assists while Victor Salamanca chipped in with a goal. With the win the team’s record stands at 2-1.

Whitman’s Varsity Football team hosted Longwood for their home opener this week. It was a tough loss but an exciting game all throughout. Come support the Wildcats on Saturday, September 19th, at their next game on the road against Riverhead.
