Surf City Teens Kickoff Celebration!
Join us Saturday, September 12th!
Teens ages 13–17 are invited to kick off the Fall Surf City Teens season with swimming, music, snacks, activities, and new friends!

City Pier Swim Update:

🌊Due to this weekend’s forecasted surf and strong currents, we are postponing the City Pier Swim to Saturday, October 31st. Safety comes first, and conditions just aren’t right for swimmers of all ages and capabilities.

🌊 On the bright side, we are now having a Halloween Pier Swim! Costumes are optional, but are highly encouraged.

🌊 Registration stays open until October 30th. You can sign up at HBSands.org. For more information, call the Edison Community Center at 714-960-8870.

We will see you on 10/31 for a safe and festive swim!

Registration is now open for the 54th Annual HB City Surf Contest, proudly presented by the City of Huntington Beach Community & Library Services Department alongside Huntington Surf & Sport. Taking place on September 12 and 13 on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier, this premier local event features all-freestyle competition across age divisions ranging from Menehune (ages 9 and under) to Legends (ages 65 and older). Entry is $50 per person, which includes food, refreshments, an official event t-shirt, and eligibility for a $200 opportunity draw gift certificate. Awards will be presented to the top six finishers in each division.

Participation is strictly limited to 175 competitors and is open exclusively to residents living within the Huntington Beach Union High School District boundary—including Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach, and Westminster—for at least 90 days prior to the contest. Space is filling quickly, and registration closes once capacity is reached. Secure your spot today by visiting HBSands.org. The Community & Library Services Department is excited to present this year’s Movies in the Park series, bringing fun, family friendly entertainment to our community parks all summer long.

The series continues tonight, July 24, at Edison Park with “Little Rascals”, where families and friends can relax under the evening sky with their blankets and lawn chairs. The fun continues throughout the season with “Minecraft Movie” at Lake Park on August 7, and
“Despicable Me 4” at Worthy Park on August 21. Each event begins at 7:00 pm, with the movie starting at 8:15 pm.

These outdoor movie nights offer a wonderful opportunity to enjoy quality time together in a welcoming community setting. Guests are encouraged to bring their own seating and snacks to make the experience even more eniovable.

Celebrating 60 Years of Huntington Beach's Bigler Parks

Sixty years ago, on June 7, 1966, Huntington Beach dedicated four new neighborhood parks, Schroeder, Greer, Wardlow, and Irby. All four were designed by noted landscape architect Richard Bigler, whose innovative designs encouraged play, exploration, and a stronger connection with the natural environment. The last park to highlight is Wardlow Park.

Named for local pioneer Robert B. Wardlow, an advocate for agriculture, infrastructure, and education, Wardlow Park has become synonymous with youth baseball in Huntington Beach. Home to Huntington Valley Little League, the park features six baseball fields, batting cages, playgrounds, picnic areas, and public art celebrating players at every stage of the game.

Generations of young athletes have learned lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance here, while families have gathered to cheer them on from the sidelines.

Celebrating 60 Years of Huntington Beach's Bigler Parks

Sixty years ago, on June 7, 1966, Huntington Beach dedicated four new neighborhood parks, Schroeder, Greer, Wardlow, and Irby. All four were designed by noted landscape architect Richard Bigler, whose innovative designs encouraged play, exploration, and a stronger connection with the natural environment. As we celebrate their shared anniversary, we're taking a closer look at each park's story.

Today, we're highlighting Schroeder Park.

Named for the adjacent Schroeder Elementary School, the park still features some of Bigler's signature rolling hills, designed to break away from the flat park layouts common at the time and create opportunities for imagination and adventure.

Over the years, Schroeder Park has evolved alongside the community. Most recently renovated in 2026, the park now features a surf-themed playground, futuristic climbers, fitness equipment, new pathways, lighting, and additional trees. It continues to serve as a gathering place for local families and even as an extension of the classroom for nearby students.

Celebrating 60 Years of Huntington Beach's Bigler Parks

Sixty years ago, on June 7, 1966, Huntington Beach dedicated four new neighborhood parks—Schroeder, Greer, Wardlow, and Irby. All four were designed by noted landscape architect Richard Bigler, whose innovative designs encouraged play, exploration, and a stronger connection with the natural environment. As we celebrate their shared anniversary, we're taking a closer look at each park's story.

Today, we're highlighting Irby Park.

Named for former Huntington Beach Mayor Earl T. Irby, this park has one of the most remarkable stories in the city's park system. Over the decades, the site inspired countless ideas and community conversations as residents searched for the best way to make use of its unique landscape.

That story took a new turn in 2023 when Friends of Irby Park and the HB Tree Society began transforming the space through volunteer-driven improvements. New pathways, native plants, habitat enhancements, and ongoing stewardship have helped create a flourishing natural area that is now recognized on the Homegrown National Park Biodiversity Map.

Today, Irby Park stands as a testament to the power of community involvement and environmental stewardship. As we celebrate its 60th anniversary, we also celebrate the volunteers who continue to shape its future.
