May is National Bike Safety Month

E bikes are a popular way to get around Huntington Beach, but riding safely is critical for protecting yourself and others on the road.
HBFD responds to numerous e bike related incidents each year. According to HBFD incident data, e bike related incidents increased 80% from 2022 to 2025. Riders under 18 years old accounted for 43.4% of all patients involved. Of the patients transported to the hospital by ambulance, nearly half required advanced life support care from paramedics due to the severity of their injuries. The remaining patients, while not suffering life threatening injuries, still required ambulance transportation for medical evaluation and treatment..

DOs of E Bike Safety:
• Wear a properly fitted helmet
• Obey traffic laws and signals
• Ride at safe speeds for conditions
• Stay alert and watch for vehicles and pedestrians
• Use lights and reflective gear at night
• Ride in the same direction as traffic

DON’Ts of E Bike Safety:
• Do not ride distracted or while using a phone
• Do not carry more passengers than the bike is designed for
• Do not weave through traffic or pedestrians
• Do not ride recklessly or perform dangerous stunts
• Do not exceed posted speed limits or ride too fast in crowded areas

Safety Tips:
• Slow down near intersections and crosswalks
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing
• Keep both hands on the handlebars whenever possible
• Inspect your brakes and tires before riding
• Be especially cautious around vehicles entering or leaving driveways and parking lots

Help keep Huntington Beach safe by riding responsibly, staying aware of your surroundings, and looking out for others on the road.

This afternoon, Huntington Beach Fire Department crews responded to a residential structure fire in the 19000 block of Bethel Circle.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the residence. Crews quickly deployed hose lines and rapidly knocked down the fire before making an aggressive interior attack to ensure the fire did not extend throughout the remainder of the home.

Thanks to the quick actions of responding personnel, the fire was contained to the area of origin, limiting further damage to the residence.

Following extinguishment, HBFD Fire Investigators responded to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department would like to thank our mutual aid partners from the Fountain Valley Fire Department and Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue for their assistance and support during this incident. Their partnership and teamwork help ensure the highest level of service to our community.

Each year, Huntington Beach Fire Department conducts annual inspections of every fire station and apparatus across A, B, and C shifts. As part of this process, each shift is responsible for presenting their station, apparatus, and station budget to department leadership.

During the inspections, Chief Officers visit each station to provide updates on department initiatives, priorities, and current projects. Crews and command staff review station conditions, apparatus readiness, and budget needs to identify opportunities for improvement, address concerns, and ensure our personnel have the resources needed to serve the community effectively.

These inspections also provide an opportunity for crews to showcase the pride they take in their stations and apparatus.

Yesterday, B-Shift completed their annual inspection. Crews spent countless hours preparing their stations and apparatus, ensuring every detail was addressed. Their engines, trucks, and support vehicles looked parade ready, reflecting the professionalism, dedication, and pride that our firefighters bring to work every day.

Thank you to all of our personnel for their hard work and commitment to maintaining the high standards of the Huntington Beach Fire Department.

Yesterday’s commercial structure fire in the 5000 block of Skylab Rd highlights the important role automatic fire sprinkler systems play in protecting lives and property.

Fire sprinklers helped contain the fire and limit its spread prior to firefighters arriving on scene, helping reduce damage and improve overall safety.

Automatic fire sprinkler systems remain one of the most effective fire protection features in commercial buildings.
