We sat down and talked with Greenfoot about their visit to Shipley Nature Center last week. They offered some insight into the best way to observe wildlife, both for the success of the observer and with respect to our local animals who live here at Shipley. When looking for wildlife, it’s best to be silent and look around you; even stopping and sitting on a bench quietly may make it easier to notice squirrels and hawks moving nearby. If we chase animals off-trail to get a better look, we just frighten and stress them out, and alert other wildlife in the area to our presence. The more we respect wildlife and their habitat, the more we can live in harmony with them.

Explore how we can connect ourselves through our five senses, ultimately more than five senses, to the outside world, Nature. Walk less than a 1⁄2 mile through the trails with stops to explore, “follow” our senses, engaging in mindful, nature connection “invitations,” (activities) structured in a carefully designed sequence that aims to slow down our busy minds, create experiences that enhance nature and our inner nature connectedness and strengthen social relationships, boosting the therapeutic and restorative effects of nature for health and well-being. 🌲

Some activities may invite quiet stillness for up to 10 minutes.

SAT | Sept. 12 11am - 12:30pm

✨️ FREE community offering. There are a limited number of spots available. Please register to reserve your spot. Walk-ins are accepted if space allows.

Pssst! We heard Greenfoot is migrating soon, and you could catch a glimpse of this gentle, not so giant, rare species at the nature center during the upcoming migration window, September 01-05! Good thing we’re about to expand our hours - more hours, more fun!

Check out the post for details about Greenfoot’s habitat, behavior, food and range. This is a great chance to practice responsible observation of Greenfoot in the wild. And if you happen to catch a glimpse, snap some photos, which can be entered into our photo challenge.

Terms & conditions apply per the post.

🪶BIRD OF THE MONTH: American Barn Owl

This stealthy hunter isn't always observed due to its nocturnal lifestyle. With specialized feathers perfect for hunting in complete silence, the American Barn Owl is an incredible sight to see. 🦉

Every month, a group of local birders come to Shipley to conduct a bird survey to talley the birds observed within the nature center. Betty Kanne, the author of the included document, organizes this birding group and shares the monthly survey counts! These surveys are posted on our bird bulletin board, just outside our interpretive center.
