Join the Huntingdon Borough Police Department for one of Huntingdon's biggest community events! This year, we're combining National Night Out with our Back to School Bash-tastic for an evening packed with fun, entertainment, community resources, and family activities.

For more than 15 years, National Night Out has brought neighbors, first responders, and community organizations together to strengthen relationships and build a safer, stronger community. What began as a small gathering has grown into a three-block downtown celebration—and this year promises to be our biggest yet!

Talking about safety doesn't have to be heavy. Experts agree the most effective approach is rooted in empowerment, body autonomy, and trusting instincts.

Here are 4 quick, actionable ways to build these habits into your daily routine:

🛑 1. Name the “Uh-Oh” Feeling
Kids don’t always have words for complex situations, but they know how their bodies feel (butterflies, a racing heart, or a sudden nervous chill).

👥 2. Shift from “Stranger Danger”
Most safety issues actually involve someone a child already knows. Shift the focus from who the person is to what they are doing.

🗣️ 3. Enforce the "No Secrets" Rule
Abusers rely on secrecy. Teach your child the difference between a fun surprise (like a birthday gift) and a secret that makes them feel uncomfortable.

🧸 4. Practice Everyday Body Autonomy
Letting kids decide who they hug, high-five, or fist-bump builds a powerful foundation.

Building these principles into your conversations creates a bridge of trust. Let them know that no matter what, you are always a safe place to talk.

With the projected extreme heat, it is important to keep everyone safe. Children are at risk in extreme heat and precautions should be taken. Here are some tips on how to beat the heat and keep your kids safe:
1. Stay hydrated- Encourage your children to drink water frequently and have it readily available
2. Dress lightly- Light colored clothing can help kids stay cool and prevent heat stress from excessive heat absorption
3. Plan for extra rest time- Heat can often make children (and their parents) feel tired.
4. Cool off with water- When your child is feeling hot, give them a cool bath or water mist to cool down. Swimming is another great way to cool off while staying active.
