Glad to be able to post this GREAT show. My favorite guest so far on Speak Out Charlotte has been Jasmine Ballard with Blexit Charlotte. For those not familiar with Blexit it is short for Blacks exiting the Democratic party. Jasmine lays out a logical and passionate rational for why those in minority (particularly African American) communities need to take a hard and honest look at what and where blindly following the promises of liberals and progressives have led them. In my over 15 years hosting this show this may very well be the best one we have done.I urge you to watch an EXTREMELY insightful and from my point of view refreshing view of politics from an engaging, intelligent, and delightful young lady Jasmine Ballard.

My opponent Elaine Powell has done it again. Given away YOUR money without thinking about the consequences. As you will hear in the report below ONLY Pat Cotham voted against this horrible idea. First the county paid $1 million dollars to a firm to loan out $5 million (20% ?) Second the firm they hired had been investigated for sloppy management as late as 2018 and Third the county agreed to NOT know to whom the money was given.
REALLY is this what passes as wise management of resources to Ms. Powell? Seems like Elaine not only does her "happy dance" when she pays 25 times tax value for land in a floodplain, she is fine with paying ridiculously high fees to a company that has a history of mismanagement and doesn't feel the need to follow up. PLEASE vote for me Jim Puckett I assure you I will ask the tough questions and DEMAND accountability and transparency

Please share everyone should be aware of who is running and pick the candidate they feel best serves their and the community's needs.
There have been no opportunities to hear Ms. Powell and me debate and discuss. Thanks to the Lake Norman Chamber and WSIC for making this available. I believe you should be able in fact I believe you really owe it to yourself and your family to make a knowledgeable decision when you vote. There are two very clear choices here and I encourage you to take some time to determine who best fits your needs. County commission is up first then stick around for the state races if you have time.
For those who missed the only county commissioner D1 debate, enjoy. I believe you will find from her own answers Ms. Powell is out of touch with a large segment if her constituency. It also appears that unless YOU call HER she feels no need to act on your behalf. It is my firm conviction we should elect leaders not pollsters.

We’ve also seen a voting trend that started in North Carolina and grew across the country. Channel 9 first reported on Blexit in 2019 and the thousands of Black voters who are leaving the Democratic party.

County Commission spends $60,000 (equivalent to $375,000 per acre) for land that has tax value of $2,400 and Elaine Powell says she will do Snoopy dance she is so happy. Due to a lack of will and skill the county folded to railroad giant CSX and overpaid. If they had negotiated with CSX and outlined that CSX could be a corporate hero by granting an easement OR simply sold the land for TWICE tax value and saving the county $55,000. The county could have named the bridge for CSX. To continue with the Peanuts theme commissioners and staff should have simply asked one of the largest landowners in America do you want to be a hero or goat (as Charlie Brown would say) Do you want your story to be you GAVE to the community or you TOOK $60,000 that could have helped educate poor children in the neighborhood, helped with teacher pay, provided in school counselors, OR allowed park and rec to purchase MUCH greater amounts of land? Instead Ms. Powell will celebrate waste and missed opportunity. This is NOT leadership, this is a lack of prioritization and failure to work in the public's best interest. Mecklenburg County will spend $60,000 on 0.16 acres of land in Seversville, so a bridge can be built over Stewart Creek for the Stewart Creek Greenway project.

It is appropriate that the County Commissioners are wearing masks. They once again robbed the citizens of Mecklenburg County and gave the money to an EXTREMELY wealthy corporation and were proud of their actions. Elaine Powell (my opponent) along with every other commissioner with the exception of Pat Cotham voted to pay CSX Railroad $60,000 for a parcel of land that could not be developed (essentially useless) that has a tax value of $2400. The staff was proud that they got the price lowered from $75,000.

This is the negotiation I would have had if I had been on board:

I would tell CSX they have a choice to make and they are completely free which path to take. They could be celebrated as a great corporate citizen if they offered up an easement or let the property go for tax value OR they can be known as being quite smug having squeezed an IMMORAL sum from from taxpayers resulting in the following.

Your request of 31 times the tax value for this land places in jeopardy completion of a greenway on the under-served Westside of Mecklenburg County or robs us of funds that could be used instead for the following:

IF you had settled for only twice tax value we would have had $55,000.00 more. Now we have $55k that will NOT be available to help educate poor minority children in that area, NOT be available to help fight Covid 19 via the health department in the same minority neighborhood. $55k that can't be used to pay supplemental teachers in at risk schools, can't be used to cover long overdue neglected park facilities, CAN'T be used to purchase additional land at much lower prices for other greenways, CAN'T be used to offset lack of revenue due to small businesses being forced out of business over lack of funds to pay their taxes and the list goes on.

I would ask before I left the room if I completely understood their choice and more importantly if THEY fully understood their choice because I want to make sure I communicate it correctly when I inform the public. Consider yourself informed. I am sorry for CSX I wasn't able to give them a heads up.

Shame on the staff, same on Elaine Powell and the other seven commissioners who JOINED CSX in agreeing to an unjust and indefensible priority of paying 30 times value on a piece of property OVER all the other more pressing needs those dollars could have covered for our community.

Please remember this when it comes time to vote in the upcoming election. I hope this county will elect people who understand how to prioritize spending and how to negotiate in the best interest of the public.

FYI A brief look at the candidates in the district races. There have been VERY few opportunities to hear from my opponent and get some insight into her priorities. You can read our responses to what we feel are the most important issues and decide which path you want to follow. As always I welcome comments, criticism and recommendations. By the way my comment about better restricting businesses regarding Covid was about less restrictions or at least more logical ones. Reads a bit different than what was said.

I believe that my sign crew may test positive for Covid 19 so I need to warn anyone who might (for some reason?) want to touch any of my signs that I strongly advise against it. I will continue to monitor our crew who I am sure are not wearing PPE sufficient to insure others can safely approach our work, I can barely get these guys to shave and shower. STAY CLEAR STAY SAFE
