September 11th will forever be a part of our nation’s story, a day of unimaginable loss, but also a day that revealed extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and selflessness.
On that morning, firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, and countless civilians faced circumstances none of us could have imagined. While others were trying to escape the danger, the first responders ran toward it. They climbed the stairs, entered the buildings, and answered the call knowing there were people who needed their help. Many of those brave men and women never came home.
As members of the Hungry Horse Volunteer Fire Department, we understand the commitment that comes with answering the call. We may serve a small community, but the responsibility we carry is no smaller. When the fire alarm sounds, we leave our families, our homes, and whatever we may be doing to stand ready to help our neighbors and those traveling through our community.
The sacrifice made on September 11th reminds us of why we serve. It reminds us that being a firefighter is not simply about the equipment we wear or the trucks we respond in. It is about service, courage, compassion, and a willingness to put the needs of others before our own.
Today, we remember the 343 firefighters and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, along with all the innocent lives lost that day. We remember their families, their brothers and sisters in the fire service, and everyone who continues to carry the weight of that loss.
