Burn Restrictions Lifted
MONTESANO —Effective 12:01 a.m. Monday, October 9, 2023. With the recent weather trend, the Grays Harbor County Fire Marshal’s office and local Fire Districts are lifting all restrictions on outdoor burning in Grays Harbor County.
The public is reminded of the importance of completely extinguishing all fires that will not be attended by dousing with water or moist soil and stirring with a shovel until all parts are cool to the touch.
Please contact ORCAA at 1-800-422-5623 or visit their website www.orcaa.org to obtain the required permits for large yard waste piles and land clearing activities.

DUE TO THE GOVERNOR’S AMENDED “STAY AT HOME” DIRECTIVES
THE FIRE DISTRICT BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HAS MADE THE
FOLLOWING CHANGES TO HOW MEETINGS ARE CONDUCTED:

Members of the public are invited to attend via Zoom online or by phone, but will not be able to actively participate in the meeting. Members of the public also have the option of attending in person at the Humptulips/Axford Prairie Fire Station #1 located at 3296 US Highway 101, one block north of the Humptulips Store, on the right. Members of the Board of Commissioners may meet via Zoom, or may attend in person. In order to comply with the Governor’s orders, the Commissioners are required to ensure that there is appropriate distancing between participants and that
participants wear a mask unless a medical condition precludes the use of a mask. If these conditions cannot be met, the meeting is required to be dismissed.

Grays Harbor Fire District 17 wants the taxpayers of this district to know that our financial records are open to the public. All expenses are reviewed at open public commissioners meetings for approval, and a system of checks and balances remain in place to ensure that no person involved in our local district can misappropriate taxpayer funds for personal profit. In addition, our district maintains no petty cash fund of any kind, and does not have a related nonprofit organization receiving and expending funds on behalf of the district. Any funds donated to the district go directly to the county treasurer for deposit and are expended only upon proper vochering at the commissioner meetings. We have no persons who are paid employees. The commissioners and district secretary receive a nominal monthly stipend, which is not increased in relation to the number of hours for which work is performed. The State Auditor’s Office in December published its findings into the investigation of possible misuse of public funds by then Grays Harbor Fire District 5 Chief Dan Prater.

There is a limited-time opportunity for district volunteers to train as EMTs in 2021, but that opportunity will be closing soon. Training expenses are paid by the fire district. Any persons interested in volunteering with the district are encouraged to contact Director of Operations Steve Sandstrom at (360)590-0391 right away. Not all district volunteers are involved in medical response for the district, and those interested in firefighting only are also encouraged to contact Director Sandstrom at this time to take part in firefighter orientation and training opportunities.

In many ways, rural volunteer fire districts must work harder than “career” departments to secure adequate funding, to maintain a workable infrastructure, and to recruit and properly train enough crew members for their needs.
