Have you heard of the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod?

Imagine the joy of being given books the night before Christmas, followed by a cozy evening of reading quietly with a hot cocoa. No dressing up for a holiday party and going out in the cold. No frenzied wrapping of presents at the last minute. Just a good book to read and no other obligations. Bliss!

If you were to celebrate Jolabokaflod this year, which book(s) do you wish would be gifted to you?!

Special thanks to Jono Hey, https://sketchplanations.com/jolabokaflod, for this wonderful image!

Looking back, 2023 has been an amazing year! It's kind of crazy to think I've self-published two books in one year. It seems like way more than a year ago that I saw pages of Ice Age Trail book coming off the press. But it was just this past January. Then came the Ristad Farms book in June. I want to thank all of you for making this a great year. 2024 will be filled with photographing the next book. I'll also be getting back in the swing of to doing art festivals again. In addition there be library author presentations. So stay tuned! Have a Happy New Year!

Here’s a classic by Stanley Kunitz. In 2000, at age 95, Kunitz was appointed U.S. Poet Laureate for the second time. He died in 2006 at age 100, leaving a literary legacy that illumines what it means to live fully, deeply, and well to the very end.

After you’ve read the poem, take some time to reflect on a few lines that speak to you and tell us what you find.

For me, there’s gold in the first five lines. They invite me to look back on my life, reflecting on all that has changed within and around me, and on the “principle of being” that abides, “from which I struggle not to stray.”

Thomas Merton called that principle “true self,” a core of being that’s always with us, no matter how shattering our changes may be. If we can’t find it, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. It means we’ve avoided the silence, the solitude, the slowness that allows us to touch in with true self—the self that knows both who and whose it is.

“The Layers” offers many lines where we might pause, reflect, and redirect. But we can’t go where the rest of the poem invites us to go until we’re within reach of that “principle of being” that keeps us grounded in our own truth.

Memo to Self: Take time to step away from your To Do List today. Hang out with an old tree for a while to be reminded that new branching and leafing depend on a root system that reaches down into life-giving ground.
