On Saturday, June 27, Hughestown Borough will host the 3rd Annual Rae of Sunshine 5K Race/Walk.

To ensure the safety of all participants, roads along the race route will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic beginning at 8:30 AM and will remain closed until the conclusion of the event.

We kindly ask residents and visitors to plan their travel accordingly and appreciate your patience and cooperation as we come together to support this special community event.

Thank you for your understanding, and we apologize for any inconvenience these temporary closures may cause.

Please use caution when traveling near the race area and follow all directions from event staff and public safety personnel.

Hughestown Emergency Services is proud to assist our friends at AVP ARFF Station 266 during the Air Force Commemorative Airpower History Tour at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.

Our EMS personnel will be providing standby coverage today and tomorrow to help ensure a safe and successful event for all attendees, participants, and aviation enthusiasts.

We are honored to support this incredible opportunity for our community to experience and learn about our nation's rich aviation and military history.

This afternoon, members from Station 143 traveled to PNC Field in Moosic to attend the Geisinger Emergency Medical Services Provider of the Year Awards held during the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton RailRiders game.

This year, our department was honored to have three members nominated for acts of heroism and outstanding service.

In December, while operating at a working structure fire, Sergeant Adelio Merlino and Foreman Chris Yacovelli removed a victim from the basement of the burning residence. After bringing the victim to safety, they immediately initiated resuscitation efforts. Adelio continued to assist the responding Advanced Life Support crew with lifesaving measures.

Lieutenant Tyler Jenkins was recognized for his role in our department's response to the February Lehigh Valley Hospital-Dickson City fire and mass casualty incident. Alongside his partner, Sergeant Adelio Merlino, Tyler responded with our ambulance, assisted during the early stages of the incident, and played a key role in the rapid and safe transport of a critically ill patient experiencing an active STEMI to Geisinger Community Medical Center.

We are proud to announce that Adelio Merlino and Chris Yacovelli were selected as the recipients of the Heroism Award.

We are extremely proud of all three nominees for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving others. Their actions reflect the highest standards of emergency medical services and bring great honor to our department and community.

This past weekend, our department was once again pleased to join our friends from Lehigh Valley Health Network Event Medical Division providing one of our staffed ambulances to assist in keeping the patrons of Pocono Raceway safe throughout the NASCAR race weekend. Our ambulance was positioned in both the Pocono Infield and later providing assistance to the Lehigh Valley Health Network Grandstand Field Hospital. During the race weekend, Pocono Raceway is known to become the third largest city in Pennsylvania behind Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It is an honor for our service to be requested to return to the track year after year to ensure everyone can enjoy the weekend events safely.

Despite having an ambulance at the track this weekend, our station remained fully staffed with Ambulances 543-1 and 543-2 ensuring our residents and mutual aid partners remained covered.

🚒 Fireworks Standby Detail 🎆

Last evening, Chief 143, Engine 143, Brush 143, and Ambulance 543-2 provided standby coverage for the Pittston Township Fire Department Picnic Fireworks Display.

We are always proud to support our neighboring departments and community events throughout the region.

When you’re shopping this week, please consider picking up an extra case of drinking water and dropping it off at your local fire station.

Firefighters wear 70+ pounds of gear in this heat, and hydration helps keep us ready and safe during operations.

This evening's in-house training began with a Task Force 1, Inc. video presentation on the Fireground Playbook, focusing on fireground strategy, tactical priorities, and the decision-making process that drives successful incident operations. The discussion emphasized the relationship between strategic objectives and tactical actions on the fireground.

Following the video, crews relocated to the Primary Center on Rock Street, where they conducted relay pumping operations between Engine 1 and Squad 3. Members worked on establishing and maintaining a reliable water supply while practicing communication and coordination between apparatus.

There was an excellent turnout for the training today. Everyone did a great job, making it a productive and worthwhile evening of training.

FSC-3470 - EL-26: Fire Ground Support (ELFS)

Minimum Age: 14 years of age
Location: Station 143
Dates: July 6, 11, 14, 19, 21, 25, 28, & August 1
Cost: $30 per student

Prerequisites: None

Must be completed prior to NFPA 1010 Support Person certification exam and/or ELFF1 start date;
• NIMS ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
• NIMS ICS-700: National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction
• Hazardous Materials Awareness
• Traffic Incident Management (TIM)
• Enrollment into ACADIS platform

Required Text:
• Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills (5th Ed.) – Jones & Bartlett
OR
• Fundamentals of Firefighter Support Person – Jones & Bartlett

Resource Materials Needed:
• Pennsylvania Edition Entry Level Fire Training Skills Book

Required Equipment:
• Computer with audio/video capability with Internet Access (if applicable)
• Pen/pencil or other appropriate note taking material
• Required textbook and skill book
• Full PPE ensemble (helmet, gloves, hood, coat, pants, boots, eye protection)
• Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
• 2 sections of rope (8’-10’) 1 section of webbing

Course Description:
To prepare students with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to begin a safe and productive fire service career, while developing their ability to provide effective non-suppression support during emergency operations. The course emphasizes fundamental tools, safety standards, and operational practices that enable personnel to assist firefighting teams through logistical, communication, and coordination tasks that enhance overall incident effectiveness
