Jacob Leisler Institute for the Study of Early New York History A study and research center devoted to colonial New York under English rule, as well as permanent home to the Papers of Jacob Leisler Project.

The Jacob Leisler Institute for the Study of Early New York History is a study and research center devoted to colonial New York under English rule, as well as permanent home to the Papers of Jacob Leisler Project. In the years spanning 1664 to 1773, the province’s diverse European settlements and Native American and African populations transformed into a cosmopolitan colonial territory with ties t

hroughout the Atlantic World. The Institute is named for Jacob Leisler (1640–1691), whose ill-fated 1689–1691 administration of New York is the period’s focal point. Leisler’s administration colored the province’s political, economic, and cultural life until the outbreak of hostilities with Great Britain in the 1770s. The Institute is an independent, nonprofit organization. As a study center, the Institute serves scholars and students of the period as well as teaching the necessary skills in order to preserve and interpret the period’s manuscript and material sources. Students of all historical disciplines, including archeology, material culture, and folklore, are encouraged to use and contribute to the Institute as an educational and archival resource, as well as prepare papers, book length manuscripts, and lectures from its holdings. Located in Hudson, New York, a small historic city in the bucolic Hudson River Valley, the Institute is easily accessible from New York City, Boston, and Albany by road and rail. Hudson, with a dynamic contemporary culture, and the surrounding countryside provide a wealth of resources relating to the period, such as the Luykas Van Alen House, the Claverack Reformed Dutch church, numerous seventeenth- and eighteenth-century architectural and archeological sites, and the extensive Van Rensselaer and Livingston manorial landholdings.

Tom Arne Midtrød, Ph.D. discusses how the outbreak of the Seven Years’ War affected Mahican and Munsee-speaking populations in the Hudson Valley. During this conflict, many Native groups felt themselves pressured to relocate to new areas both inside and outside of the Valley, creating a refugee crisis that led to a varied of responses from both colonial officials and the Mohawks and other members of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Six Nations.

The Jacob Leisler Institute today welcomed Ashley Birdsall as a summer 2026 student intern. Ms. Birdsall is a final semester graduate student at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. She is working on her Master of Arts in History with a concentration in Public History. Her research interests are women and gender, sexuality, and medicine of the early modern period, specifically in seventeenth-century England. She is looking forward to interning at the Jacob Leisler Institute this summer to learn more about the colonial history of New York and British Atlantic history in North America. We are delighted to have Ashley join our team.

The Jacob Leisler Institute will again be participating this year in the Hudson Children's Book Festival on May 2 at Columbia-Greene Community College. One of the largest such events in New York State and the nation, the festival has attracted thousands each year since 2009. It is particularly an annual high point for me, as the enthusiasm of children of all ages reveals a keen quest for learning that we often overlook as adults. You will find the Jacob Leisler Institute's table in the Community Room. Stop by and say hi.

The Jacob Leisler Institute's January 2025 speaker BJ Lillis has a stimulating article in the January 2026 William and Mary Quarterly. Titled "To the Heart of Empire: Contesting Capitalism in the Hudson Valley and Pressing Indigenous Land Claims in London, 1766," Lillis presents a refreshing new interpretation of "the vision of British North America that the Wappingers and Mohicans presented so vividly in London—a British North America populated, in part, by men and women who were both British and Native. . ."

A recent query to the Jacob Leisler Institute relating to a possible relationship between New Netherland domine Johannes Theodorus Polhemus/Polhemius (1598-1676) took me back to research I conducted in the 1990s resulting in an article published in the Van Voorhees NIEUWSBRIEF (Winter/Spring 1999), p. 3ff. My theory at that time was based primarily on research done in the 1920s by genealogist Louis P. DeBoer. An excellent analysis of my research then is found on rootsweb: https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bodine/genealogy/n14900.html

My subsequent in-depth research into a possible connection of Polhemus and Leisler revealed that contemporary documents showed that THERE IS NONE! Unfortunately, by that time my interests had shifted to other topics and I did not write a follow-up essay. Nonetheless, I am surprised to discover that many current genealogies show this connection, though more likely derived from DeBoer’s work rather than my 1999 article. I would like to make it clear, however, that a familial connection to the Polhemus family is nowhere to be found in the extensive Leisler family papers.
