Columbia County Sheriff's Office

Columbia County Sheriff's Office Columbia County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Hudson, New York The position of Sheriff in Columbia County dates back to at least 1772 when Phillip J.

The Office of the Sheriff is the oldest office under the system of common law in the United States and is an integral part of government in the State of New York. Livingston was appointed to the position. In 1822, Samuel E. Hudson was the first Sheriff to be elected to serve a term of three years. Since then, the Sheriff has been an elected official with the current term being for four years. As t

he oldest constitutional law enforcement officer of the county, the Sheriff is charged with maintaining the peace in all municipalities, villages, and townships within his/her jurisdiction, as well as the care and custody of persons pending court action. The Sheriff's Office is unique in that it is one agency that provides five public safety functions ...law enforcement, corrections, security services, emergency management, and civil enforcement. In addition to police services, the Sheriff maintains a 135-bed county jail located at the Public Safety Facility and provides security for Local, County, and Supreme courts and other county buildings such as the County Clerk's Office and Social Services. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is a state-accredited law enforcement agency that currently employs 115 full-time and approximately 60 part-time men and women who serve as Deputy Sheriffs, Correction Officers, and civilian members of the Communications, Civil, Records, Court Attendant, Medical and Food Service sections of the Office. The men and women within the four divisions of the Office, (Law Enforcement, Corrections, Security Services, and Civil Enforcement), provide a wide range of services to County residents. The Sheriff's Office is a civil service agency. Full-time employees are required to pass a civil service test and be ranked on a list approved by New York State and administered by the county Civil Service Commission. Columbia County is located in the Hudson Valley of New York State between the Hudson River and the Massachusetts and Connecticut state lines. It is approximately 125 miles north of New York City, 30 miles south of Albany, and 100 miles west of Boston, MA. In addition to approximately 64,000 residents residing over 644 square miles of land area, Columbia County has roughly 30 miles of Hudson River waterfront along its west border. The Sheriff's Office owes its successful development to the support of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors, the many previous Sheriffs, and all of the men and women both past and present, who have dedicated themselves to the service and protection of the citizens of Columbia County.

Yesterday, we hosted a hands-on training session introducing our new Axon Virtual Reality (VR) training system for our instructors and were joined by representatives from several local law enforcement agencies.

This "train-the-trainer" session focused on building internal capacity so our team can now deliver realistic, scenario-based VR training to deputies and officers throughout the region. The system provides immersive, reality-based scenarios that allow participants to practice critical decision-making skills in a safe and controlled environment.

The VR platform includes training in areas such as community engagement, autism awareness, crisis intervention, de-escalation, officer safety, and use-of-force decision-making, along with a variety of other scenarios tailored to real-world law enforcement encounters.

One of the biggest advantages of VR training is the ability to provide frequent, high-quality repetitions without the costs associated with traditional live-fire and equipment-based training. Officers can complete short training sessions before or during shifts, allowing for more consistent practice and skill development. The system also reduces costs related to ammunition, Taser cartridges, instructor time, and range operations while still providing realistic and effective training experiences.

We are excited to incorporate this technology into our training program and continue investing in innovative tools that enhance preparedness, professionalism, and public safety.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the start of another growing season for the Columbia County Jail’s Horticultural Program.

With the guidance of dedicated Corrections staff, incarcerated individuals are once again helping plant and maintain a variety of vegetables and herbs, including tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, squash, cabbage, onions, basil, and parsley. The produce harvested from the garden will be used by our kitchen staff in meal preparation at the facility.

The program provides participating incarcerated individuals with an opportunity to work outdoors, learn valuable gardening and horticultural skills, and contribute to a meaningful project. From planting and watering to weeding and maintaining the garden, participants take pride in helping the garden thrive throughout the season.

Beyond producing fresh vegetables, the program offers benefits that include physical activity, teamwork, responsibility, and hands-on experience that can be applied long after an individual leaves the facility.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Corrections staff who dedicate their time and effort to making this program successful each year. Their commitment helps create positive opportunities for growth, learning, and rehabilitation within our facility.

We look forward to watching the garden flourish throughout the summer and sharing updates as the season progresses! 🌿🍅🥒

🚑❤️ National CPR & AED Awareness Week ❤️🚑

This week is a reminder that CPR training and access to AEDs save lives.

Recently, our community saw firsthand just how important these lifesaving tools and skills truly are. During the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Mutual Aid Foundation Heroes & Hope Gala, community member Ken Bovat shared his story of suffering a heart attack at Meadowgreens Golf Course and recognized the deputies and responders who helped saved his life that day.

Stories like this remind us that seconds matter. Early CPR and immediate access to an AED can dramatically increase someone’s chance of survival before EMS arrives.

As first responders, we strongly encourage everyone to take the time to learn CPR and how to use an AED. You never know when you may be in a position to save a family member, friend, coworker, or complete stranger.

We also want to recognize all dispatchers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, nurses, teachers, coaches, and community members who step up in emergencies and make a difference every single day.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Mutual Aid Foundation is currently working toward placing AEDs in every patrol vehicle throughout the county — an investment that could help save lives in our communities.

If you would like to support this mission and help keep Columbia County safe, please visit Columbia County Sheriff's Mutual Aid Foundation.

A few minutes of training can make a lifetime of difference.
