6/10/2026 – We will have a couple of days of very hot and humid weather starting Wednesday afternoon through Friday. The humidity will start increasing on Wednesday and peaking on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures may reach into the 90’s on Thursday and Friday and when coupled with the high humidity will probably cause the National Weather Service to issue heat advisories for those days as the heat index could be around 100 degrees.

Because heat indices could be at or over 100 degrees, we should all start hydrating now to build up for water loss you could experience in the next several days should you need to work outside.

So drink up . . . about 2.5 to 3 liters of water over the course of the day for the next few days. If you do end up doing work outside, consider adding a drink with electrolytes to replace those lost through perspiration. Pay attention to signs of dehydration, such as thirst, dizziness, or fatigue. Seek shade and adjust your water intake accordingly to avoid heat exhaustion and especially heat stroke, which is considered a medical emergency and could require IV therapy.

Keep yourself and the people working alongside of you safe during this short heat wave.

6/3/2026 – Members of the Greenport Fire Department were at the Columbia County Fire Training Facility tonight to train on car fires and shorthanded hose deployment to a second floor fire. We ran through several evolutions of each.

We are often short staffed for daytime fires, so when the first arriving unit is the ladder truck, we still need to pull hand lines to attack the fire. This was a chance to practice efficiently deploying hose lines, and how the crew of the second-due apparatus fills in where needed to complete the stretch and handle other safety related duties.

When our heavy rescue is first on the scene of a car fire, we have limited tank water and need to be efficient with our water usage.
