Today was an emotional day at the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office.

We have been very careful and deliberate in finding the right home for K9 Roco. He is more than just a police dog, he is one of us and a valued member of our team.

For nearly five years, Roco faithfully served the citizens of Sheridan County and assisted numerous agencies throughout Northwest Kansas. Alongside his handler, Deputy Babcock, Roco played a significant role in removing illegal drugs from our communities and helping make our region a safer place to live and raise our families.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication, hard work, and countless hours Deputy Babcock and K9 Roco devoted to law enforcement and public safety.

While it is difficult to see Roco leave, we are excited that he will continue his law enforcement career with an agency at the Hitchcock County Sheriffs Department, in Nebraska. We wish his new handler and department the very best and look forward to watching this new team continue the important work of serving and protecting their community.

Thank you, Deputy Babcock and Roco, for your service, loyalty, and the impact you made throughout Northwest Kansas. Once a member of our team, always a member of our team.

HOT TOPIC- Bicycle, E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Reminder

Parents and Kids,

As summer is here and more children are out riding, the Sheridan County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone about bicycle, e-bike, and e-scooter safety.

We continue to receive complaints regarding unsafe riding, including riders not obeying traffic laws, failing to stop at intersections, riding into traffic, and operating recklessly. Many of these complaints are reported long after the incident occurs, making enforcement difficult.

If you witness unsafe riding, please contact Sheridan County Communications immediately at 785-675-3481 so an officer can respond while the incident is occurring.

Parents: Please take a few minutes to talk with your children about riding safely and following traffic laws. Continued problems could result in restrictions or bans, similar to what other communities have implemented. Let's work together to avoid that.

✅ Obey all stop signs and traffic signals.
✅ Ride on the right side of the road and with traffic.
✅ Yield to pedestrians.
✅ Watch for vehicles at all intersections.
✅ Use lights and reflective gear when riding at night.
✅ Avoid distractions such as phones or headphones.
✅ Wear a helmet every ride.
✅ E-bikes and e-scooters are not toys, they can travel at speeds capable of causing serious injury.

Remember, bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters are expected to follow many of the same traffic laws as motor vehicles. Safe riding protects not only the rider but everyone around them.

Motorist: we also wanna ensure that motorists are also slowing down and being more vigilant with the increase of pedestrians, cyclists and children at play.

Let's have a fun and safe summer!

PUBLIC NOTICE TO REGISTERED OFFENDERS

Changes to Kansas Offender Registration Requirements Effective July 1, 2026

The State of Kansas has enacted Senate Bill 487 (SB 487), which makes several changes to offender registration requirements. These changes will take effect on July 1, 2026.

Registration Fee Increase
SB 487 adds an additional $10 registration fee for offenders who reside in the county. This fee is in addition to the current $20 registration fee, bringing the total registration cost to $30 per registration.

The Sheriff's Office will continue to retain the existing $20 registration fee.
The additional $10 fee will be submitted to the County Treasurer's Office for transfer to a special state technology fund.
This fund is intended to assist the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) with updates and improvements to the offender registration software system.

Important: The additional $10 fee applies only to offenders who reside in the county. Offenders who register solely because they work or attend school in the county will not be charged the additional fee.

Changes to Payment Requirements
SB 487 also removes the previous 15-day grace period for registration payments.
Beginning July 1, 2026:
Registration fees are due at the time of registration.

Individuals who fail to pay the required fee at the time of registration may be issued a Notice to Appear (NTA).

If the registration fee is paid within 20 days of the registration date, the NTA must be dismissed.

If you have questions regarding these changes or your registration requirements, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 785-675-3481

Effective Date: July 1, 2026

Good evening, Sheridan County residents.

It has been a very busy evening across the county with numerous reports of storm damage, including downed trees, signs, fences, irrigation pivots, power poles, roofs removed from outbuildings, and other storm-related damage.

We are asking for the public’s assistance. If you have sustained storm damage, please contact Sheridan County Communications at 785-675-3481 to report it. Personnel from the National Weather Service in Goodland will be in the area tomorrow morning conducting storm damage assessments.

Storms are extremely unpredictable, and tonight’s conditions were especially challenging due to rain-wrapped activity. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at this time. However, significant property damage has already been documented.

Current reported damage includes:

13 power poles down
One roof removed from an outbuilding
One roof removed from a commercial building
Two enclosed trailers overturned

Any additional damage reports would be greatly appreciated.

When calling, please have the following information ready:

Thank you to all emergency responders who assisted throughout the evening, and especially to our dispatchers who handled a very demanding night of calls and coordination.

Public Announcement

April 8th, 2026

Due to the anticipated large volume of vehicles participating in an upcoming funeral procession, traffic delays are expected around the noon hour. In the interest of public safety, the procession route will be as follows:

17th Street north to U.S. Highway 24
U.S. Highway 24 west to 10W (the K23/U24 intersection will be blocked)
10W south to the Catholic Cemetery

Due to limited parking at the cemetery, overflow vehicles will be directed to park along both sides of 10W and Sheridan Avenue.

Important Notice for Procession Participants:
Please park your vehicles along the edge of the roadway and keep the center lanes clear at all times to allow access for emergency vehicles. Additionally, all participants are asked to drive with headlights on and hazard lights activated so traffic control personnel and other drivers can clearly identify vehicles in the procession.

We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as traffic flow will be temporarily disrupted.
