Sheriff's Office investigates car verse train crash in Enfield.

On Monday, April 1 2024 at approximately 4:15 pm, the Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a report of a train versus car traffic crash on the Hammett Road in Enfield.

When deputies arrived, they confirmed a car had been struck by a train and the car came to rest a short distance down the tracks. The lone occupant of the car received minor injuries. None of the occupants of the train were Injured.

The car received front-end damage; the train only received minor damage to one of its sides The train was not derailed, nor was any of the cargo impacted.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, several witnesses and the driver of the car indicated the flashing red lights and train signals were not activated until after the vehicles collided.

The area was blocked for a short period and there was no risk to those in the surrounding area.

We would like to congratulate Firefighter Nathan Gilman on an award he received due to his actions on a recent medical call. Mr. Gilman was a part of a team effort who worked to provide high-quality CPR to a patient suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest.

Thanks to Nathan's actions -- along with the actions of others -- that patient received a good prognosis and was discharged from the hospital to recover at home.

This scenario is rare. The national average of "Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest" achieving return of spontaneous circulation (a return of a heart beat) is 5-10%. This is a testament of the hard work by all involved and we are proud to have him as a part of our team!

Good job Nathan!
