🔥 Heads up, neighbors!

Today from late morning into early evening, weather conditions—dry brush, gusty southwest winds, and low humidity—will make it easier for fires to start and spread across our region.

With the statewide burn ban in effect until May 14, we’re asking everyone in the community to be extra careful. Even small sparks from equipment or discarded smoking materials can quickly become dangerous in these conditions.

Let’s work together to keep Howard Beach safe.

🔥 HIGH BRUSH & WIND‑DRIVEN FIRE RISK TODAY — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Dry vegetation + low humidity + strong, gusty winds are creating dangerous fire conditions today. Even a small spark can turn into a fast‑moving wildfire.

Why the risk is elevated today:
• Dry brush: Recent dry weather has left grasses and shrubs extremely flammable.
• Low humidity: The air is pulling moisture out of vegetation, making it easier to ignite.
• High winds: Gusts can spread flames rapidly and carry embers long distances.
• Wind shifts: Sudden changes in wind direction can make fires unpredictable.

What you should avoid:
• Outdoor burning of any kind
• Fire pits, bonfires, or brush piles
• Tossing cigarette butts from vehicles
• Parking vehicles on dry grass
• Using equipment that creates sparks (chainsaws, grinders, welding)

How to help prevent fires:
• Secure trailer chains so they don’t drag and spark
• Keep a fire extinguisher or water source nearby if working outdoors
• Report smoke or fire immediately—early calls save acres
• Follow local fire restrictions and alerts

If you see smoke:
• Move away from the area
• Call local authorities right away
• Do not attempt to extinguish large fires yourself

Let’s keep our community safe by staying alert and preventing sparks before they start.
