Houston’s proposed budget is dropping the first week of May, and there’s already a projected $174M deficit on the table.

What does that mean? Potential impacts to everyday city services and how Houston operates.

As City Council works through the numbers, this is something residents should be paying attention to.

We’ll keep you updated. Stay tuned.

On this last day of Black Women’s History Month, we’re doing a to our Gospel Brunch 🖤✨

A full-circle moment celebrating the brilliance, leadership, and legacy of Black women. From powerful conversations and faith-filled moments to joy, connection, and community, this recap captures what it truly means to gather with purpose.

Named in honor of the women who helped build our foundation, this wasn’t just a brunch, it was a reminder of the impact Black women have always had and will continue to have.

And as we reflect on yesterday’s Supreme Court decision, we’re reminded that the fight for equity and representation continues—making spaces like this, and the leadership of Black women, more important than ever.

Take a look back with us 💐

The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a 6–3 ruling that limits a key protection under the Voting Rights Act.

At the center is Section 2, which has helped protect minority voting power in district maps. The decision in Louisiana v. Callais creates new uncertainty around how those protections will be applied.

This is why every election matters.

Make a plan to vote and stay engaged in upcoming elections:

• Houston City Council District C Special Runoff
Early Voting - Now until May 12
Election Date- May 16
• SD 4 Special Election — May 2
• Primary Runoff — May 26
• Midterm Elections — November 3

Houston Police Department must go beyond termination—release a clear statement on what disciplinary standards are in place, how bias is addressed internally, and what steps are being taken to rebuild community trust.

No one should fear the police in their own city. HBAD is on the ground demanding accountability so that Black Houstonians can live freely and safely. Your donation fuels that work. Give today.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our General Body Meeting focused on Safety, Support & Survivor Advocacy.

We had an impactful discussion with James “Smokie” Phillips and Precinct 7’s Domestic Violence & Human Trafficking Teams, alongside Carvana Cloud, founder of Empowered Survivors, on survivor advocacy, community safety, and the resources available to support those in need.

We are especially grateful to everyone who donated survivor kits. These items provide immediate care, dignity, and essential support to individuals navigating crisis situations, reminding them they are not alone.

Thank you to those who showed the courage to share your stories and create such an organic, healing moment for everyone in the room.

Special thanks to Carvana Cloud and Judge Damiane Dianne Curvey for your generosity and commitment to supporting survivors in our community, and to Judge Sharon Burney for hosting us.
