21 years ago, today. A sad day for many who endure the memory of this particular morning. Many of those who still run the streets of Houston everyday carrying on traditions and the calling once shared by Captain Burke.

May we always carry on and learn from our fallen brothers and sisters so they may rest easy.

Since 2005, February has always been tough month for those of us who have lineage and history at Firehouse 46. In 2015, February became increasingly difficult with another loss of one of our own.

10 years to the date, his memory remains fresh amongst many of us still in the department and those recently retired. We honor and remember him for his dedication and service to everyone—both on and off duty.

20 years ago seems like a long time to most folks. So much can happen over the course of two decades. For some though, it’s the not so distant past. For the few that were there, it’s as vivid as yesterday.

For all of us who bear the patch of the smoking dog…we will always remember. We will ensure his name and his story is carried through our history with honor for as long as we remain.

Today marked 1 month and 1 day from the apartment fire where 3 of our own put their training, gear, and luck to the ultimate test. It also was the final official release from the burn unit as Sr Captain Escamilla walked out to his family, salutes and applause just as firefighters Jones and Guzman had just days before.

The fire tested their skills, but their stay at Memorial Hermann tested their grit. We, the family that is Firehouse 46, extend our utmost thanks and gratitude to the burn unit staff Memorial Hermann. Our boys have a long road to full recovery and it brings us comfort that they will be receiving the care deserved for their sacrifices made.

To friends, families, and brothers & sisters of the firefighting communities across this nation, we thank you for the continued support as our brothers heal.

46s has been busy with some burners lately as always across most of the shifts. Winter time always seems to bring one or two extra our way.

This morning was no different and seemed like routine fire that took a nasty turn. Years of street-cred and training kicked in while our truck crew used their training and tenacious grit (with a touch of luck) to narrowly escape an unexpected flashover.

To our brothers and fellow citizens of Houston alike, thank you for the wonderful support for this troubling episode. Know this, that no matter what, in your harshest of times, we will always be coming for you.
