Meet Anthony!!

He grew up in the Hobby Area. Years later, he came back—not just to open a business, but to pour back into the community that helped shape him.

Since opening ICU Lookin Barber Studio in 2019, this second-time business owner has turned his craft into an opportunity to create jobs, teach barbering skills, mentor future entrepreneurs, and encourage young people to become confident, educated, resourceful, and self-sufficient.

And his impact doesn’t stop at the shop.

As a Hobby Area District Board member, he connects local businesses with resources, supports partnerships and community events, and helps make Hobby Area Fest happen.

For ICU Lookin Barber Studio, coming back to the Hobby Area meant coming home—and finding another way to give back.

Hobby Area District 🌧️🌀

As Tropical Storm Edouard approaches the Gulf Coast, we encourage everyone in the Hobby Area District community to stay safe, stay prepared and stay weather aware.

Please continue monitoring official weather alerts from the City of Houston, Harris County and the National Weather Service.

Conditions can change quickly, especially when heavy rainfall and possible street flooding are involved.

🚨 Important numbers & resources to keep handy:

911— Life-threatening emergencies, including police, fire, medical emergencies or emergency rescues.
311— City of Houston non-emergency services and information.
211— Texas disaster, shelter and community resource information.

Follow Harris County emergency updates and sign up for local alerts through Ready Harris.

Most importantly, never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Check on your family, neighbors, older adults and anyone who may need additional assistance. Charge your devices, secure outdoor items and have your emergency supplies ready.

Some businesses are built in a community. Others are built for the community.

For the owner of Icu Lookin ,the Hobby Area is home. Born and raised in Houston and having grown up in this area, his journey eventually brought him back, not only as a second-time business owner, but as someone committed to investing in the neighborhood that helped shape him.

After previously operating a business off Fuqua until 2018, he returned to the Hobby Area in search of greater visibility and opportunity. In April of 2019, ICU Lookin Barber Studio officially opened its doors.

But his work goes far beyond the barber chair.

Through his business,he works consistently towards building a stronger more collaborative community and seeks to support others in the area.

That same commitment extends throughout the Hobby Area. As a Hobby Area District Board member, he helps connect fellow business owners with resources and partnerships, supports community events, and lends his time and energy to the upcoming Hobby Area Fest!

His collaborative spirit to build community is a philosophy rooted in making sure those of community members in the Hobby Area know someone cares and showing them what’s possible when they are involved and engaged with local resources and organizations such as the Hobby Area District board. A positions he takes on with the willingness to help those around him.

This is more than a story about a neighborhood barber studio. It’s a story about coming home, building a business, and using that business to build community.

For nearly four decades, Central Texas BBQ Houston has been part of the Hobby Area story.

Established in 1988, this family-owned business is now entering a new chapter with the next generation taking the lead.

After years of being connected to the family business and helping along the way, the transition into ownership came at a time when the original owners were ready to retire and her own sons were heading off to college. What started as stepping in to help soon became an opportunity to take everything the family had built and carry it forward.

Today, as a first-time business owner, she is honoring the history and word-of-mouth reputation that has kept Central Texas BBQ going for decades while finding new ways to introduce the restaurant to another generation of customers.

And it’s still very much a family affair. Her sons have worked in the restaurant over the years and are now helping bring a new perspective—including helping the business strengthen its presence on social media.

HONORING THE HISTORY. BUILDING WHAT’S NEXT.

After nearly four decades in the Hobby Area, Central Texas BBQ Houston is looking toward its next chapter.

Under new family ownership, one of the biggest goals is simple: help more people discover them.

While lunchtime keeps the restaurant busy, catering already makes up a significant part of the business, supported by local companies and organizations throughout the area including those connected to nearby Hobby Airport. Moving forward, expanding catering and increasing the restaurant’s visibility are two major priorities.

They’re also embracing something the previous generation didn’t rely on; social media. With a little help from the next generation of the family, they’re using Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to tell their story and bring new faces through the door.

And, that’s where community connection matters.

The Hobby Area District wants our local small businesses to know about the resources, opportunities and support available right here in their community.
