A Plea to Texas Educators: Vote for Your Profession
Greg Abbott is running for governor again, promising to eliminate school-district property taxes for homeowners. But where will school funding come from? His proposal offers NO CLEAR replacement revenue mechanisms.
The Reality:
Texas public schools rely heavily on local property taxes plus state funds. Eliminating homeowner property taxes without a replacement plan means:
• More budget cuts to already-strained districts
• Loss of programs: libraries, fine arts, full-time teachers
• Continued underfunding while voucher schemes siphon public dollars to private institutions
The Record Speaks:
Under Abbott’s leadership, Texas has:
• Systematically defunded public schools
• Attacked educator professionalism and autonomy
• Failed to address teacher shortages with competitive pay or restored retirement benefits
Educators:
Educators are in the fight of their professional lives. They see it daily - crumbling infrastructure, overflowing classrooms, supplies they buy themselves, positions cut, staff stretched thin.
Ask: Has this governor made teachers’ jobs easier or harder? Has Abbott and his people empowered teachers or starved classrooms?
Tax cuts can’t buy books, hire assistants, or repair schools. Our students need a well-funded, robust public school system - not empty promises from those actively dismantling it.
Let’s vote FOR our classrooms. FOR our libraries. FOR our students. FOR teachers.
