Apply now to become our next Artist Resident and join an impressive roster of diverse Houston artists kicking traditions and taking space.

DEADLINE TO APPLY: DECEMBER 5, 2025

This residency provides artists of any discipline with the dedicated space to bring their big ideas for creative public programming to life. Artists also receive the mentorship, funding, and resources needed to do so successfully.

This year, two individual artists or artist teams will be selected. Each selected resident will have a nine-week mentor-guided development phase, followed by eight weeks of access to a 2,500 sq. ft. gallery space at Winter Street Studios. Residents are expected to activate the space through exhibitions, performances, community-based programs, or other engaging activations relating to their proposed project theme or concept. Each resident will receive a $3,600 honorarium to offset production costs, along with additional stipends available to help with the creation of promotional assets.

On November 19, The Artist Survey Town Hall brought together more than 70 artists and creative workers from across Greater Houston for an honest conversation about what’s needed to strengthen our arts ecosystem.

Our team and our partners at SMU DataArts will consider all notes, reflections, and outcomes from the Town Hall to help us finalize the questions on The Greater Houston Artist Survey, launching in February 2026.

Did you miss the Town Hall or have additional feedback to share? We’d still love to hear from you! Please fill out the feedback form to share the issues that most impact your sustainability as an artist in the Greater Houston area, as well as any other challenges and opportunities you see. The form will remain open through December 7, 2025.

In 2021, more than 200 artists across nine counties shared their perspectives on what it takes to thrive in Houston’s creative ecosystem.

Now, Fresh Arts and national research leader SMU DataArts are expanding that conversation through the 2026 Greater Houston Artist Survey—a collaborative effort to better understand artists' needs and help shape the programs, resources, and policies that will strengthen the region’s creative community for years to come.

Artists will help shape every stage of this effort. Through the advisory committee, community town halls, and ongoing feedback opportunities, the survey will reflect real lived experiences and the priorities that matter most to Houston’s creative community.

If you identify as an artist, arts administrator, or creative worker in any discipline, we call on you to let your voice be heard. Your insight will help us understand how we can build a city where your creativity is supported and valued.
