Rice Stands Up

Rice Stands Up Make America /Kind/ Again While protests are unpredictable, find out as much as you can about what the protest will look like before you get there. Ignore them.

How to Prepare for a protest:
(i) Do your research - make sure you know who organized it, what their goals are, and what their history is. (ii) Dress appropriately - wear comfortable tennis shoes. Heavy clothing is recommended as extra protection, and if you are worried about tear gas, bring protective eyewear and a bandana soaked in apple cider vinegar. (iv) Bring as little as possible - in a large group of people, you won’t want to be worrying about keeping track of your stuff. Consider making a sign. The takeaways:
There will probably be people who are aggressive towards the rally. There will probably be police on standby. Do what they say. Do not step onto the streets, and do not enter private property. If there is sufficient interest in any particular rally, we will organize a group to all go together. Otherwise, go with friends and stay with them the whole time, and make sure other people know where you are.

A powerful example of the difference that activism and peaceful protests can make. This was a hard-fought victory for Native American sovereignty, and well deserved by the incredibly brave Sioux tribe and water protectors. Props to the administration for finally stepping up!

The Army will not approve an easement that would allow the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota, the Army's assistant secretary for civil works announced Sunday.

An important message and cause to remember, especially during this holiday season.
Shared by Elana Margosis: "The water protectors at Standing Rock have a Amazon wishlist of supplies they need. Every day, and on Thanksgiving especially, it is imperative to remember the continuing oppression of Native Americans. I encourage you to share this list and help the water protectors at Standing rock.
The list is found at:

Courtesy Vivian Schwab:
"Hey All, Paul Ryan is currently conducting a phone survey on who supports the ACA (Obamacare). You don't have to speak directly to anyone, just call, and after the recorded message, press a number to indicate your support of ACA. Wouldn't it be great to flood the survey with support? (202) 225-3031 or 202-225-0600 If you get dead air stay on the line, it takes up to 90sec to connect to survey. Once it finally picks up, follow the prompts. If your call isn't answered at first or it goes directly to the recording of "mailbox is full," wait 15 seconds and then try again. If too many people are calling at once, the survey won't start, but if you wait you'll get through after trying again."

THIS IS A REAL SURVEY (http://www.snopes.com/paul-ryan-conducting-obamacare-phone-survey/)! Take action and let Congress know that you are in support of Obamacare.

You can give the House Speaker your opinion on the Affordable Care Act — if you're patient.

Here's some real campus impact: sign the petition to help Texans for Climate Change Action bring renewable, green energy sources to the table of Rice negotiation.

Rice University in 2015 and 2016 lowered its carbon footprint by purchasing electricity inclusive of green energy sources [1, 2, 3]. According to Rice’s Administrative Center for Sustainability and Energy Management, Rice will soon solicit bids to purchase electricity for the years 2018, 2019, and 2...
