We are proud to highlight our three outstanding fellows who are currently interning and making a meaningful impact in our community. Through their dedication, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service, they are helping strengthen programs, support families, and expand opportunities for those we serve.

Their work reflects the power of global collaboration—bringing new ideas, cultural exchange, and innovative approaches that directly benefit our local community. From supporting outreach efforts to contributing to program development, their presence is already creating lasting value.

This opportunity is made possible through the U.S. Department of State’s Exchange Programs, which foster international partnerships and empower emerging leaders to gain hands-on experience while making a difference. We are grateful to be part of a program that not only develops future changemakers but also enriches our community in the process.

🌱 “Food Bridges the Brain” — Here’s Something You Probably Didn’t Know!

Did you know that what children eat can directly impact how well they learn, focus, and behave—within hours?

Research shows that balanced meals with the right nutrients can:
🧠 Improve memory and attention
⚡ Reduce hyperactivity and mood swings
📚 Boost early learning and problem-solving skills

Here’s a simple trick you can start using TODAY in your program:

👉 Pair foods to power the brain:

🍎 Fruit + 🥜 Protein (apple slices + sunflower butter)

🥕 Veggies + 🧀 Healthy fat (carrots + cheese)

🍞 Whole grains + 🍗 Protein (whole grain toast + turkey)

Why this works:
When you combine natural sugars (like fruit) with protein or healthy fats, it helps keep children’s energy stable—no crashes, no spikes, just steady learning power.

💬 Think about it: Ever seen kids get super hyper after a sugary snack… then crash? This is how you prevent that.

At PCCPA, we believe nutrition isn’t just about meeting requirements—it’s about building better learners and healthier futures.

🚨 MYTH BUSTED! 🚨

Some people think CACFP is only for low-income programs…

👀 Plot twist: It’s NOT!

🎉 FACT: ALL child care programs can participate!

That means if you run a child care home or center, you could be getting support to serve healthy meals & snacks for kids — and receive reimbursements while doing it.

🍎🥕🍞 Because feeding kids well shouldn’t mean doing it alone.

So if you’ve ever thought:
🤔 “Is CACFP even for me?”

The answer might surprise you.

🤯 Did You Know Child Care Programs Can Get Help Paying for Healthy Meals?

Yep it’s true! Through the CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program), participating child care homes and centers can receive reimbursements for serving nutritious meals and snacks to children.

A child can receive up to 3 reimbursable meal services per day, such as:

🥞 Breakfast
🍗 Lunch
🥕 Snack
🍲 Supper

(Any combination of 2 meals and 1 snack or 1 meal and 2 snacks.)

That means children get the healthy food they need to learn, grow, and play, while providers receive support for the meals they’re already serving. ❤️

👩‍🍳 Providers: If you’re serving meals in your child care program, you may qualify for CACFP reimbursements.

At PCCPA, we help child care homes and centers across the State of Texas with:
✔ CACFP enrollment
✔ Training & compliance support
✔ Nutrition guidance
✔ Ongoing program assistance

🛒 CACFP Myth vs. Fact!

❌ MYTH: CACFP buys the groceries for your daycare.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Imagine a CACFP grocery fairy dropping off milk, fruit, and veggies at your door every week. 🧚‍♀️🥕🥛

✅ FACT: CACFP reimburses you for meals and snacks that meet USDA meal pattern requirements.

That means you purchase the food, serve creditable meals, and then receive reimbursement for those meals when they meet CACFP guidelines.

📋 Pro Tip: Make sure the foods you purchase match what you record on your Meal Production Records.
If your menu says apples, milk, and whole grain bread… your receipts should show apples, milk, and whole grain bread too. 🍎🥛🍞

Good documentation helps protect your reimbursement and your program.

🧐 CACFP Myth vs. Fact Time!

❌ MYTH: If a parent brings food, the meal can’t count for CACFP.

✅ FACT: A parent can provide ONE component of the meal as long as the SITE provides the rest of the required CACFP components.

So if a parent walks in with bananas like 🍌 “I brought something!”
That’s perfectly fine! As long as the site provides the remaining required meal components, the meal can still qualify. 🙌

🥧 But quick note… if they bring pie, sorry that one still doesn’t count. Grain-based desserts aren’t creditable under CACFP meal patterns.

CACFP rules can sound tricky, but once you know the facts, it all makes sense.

Follow PCCPA for more myth-busting tips, helpful reminders, and a little CACFP fun along the way! 😄

🥣🕵️‍♂️ CACFP Cereal Detective: The 5-Second Sugar Test!

Ever stood in the cereal aisle thinking…

“Is this cereal CACFP creditable… or a sugar bomb in disguise?” 🍬💣

Good news — you can check in about 5 seconds using the Nutrition Facts label.

---

# # # 🔎 The CACFP Sugar Rule
To be creditable in CACFP, breakfast cereals must have:

No more than 6 grams of sugar per dry ounce.

---

# # # ⚡ The 5-Second Trick (No Calculator Needed)

Look at the Nutrition Facts label:

1️⃣ Find Serving Size (grams)
2️⃣ Find Total Sugars (grams)

Now do this quick trick:

👉 Multiply the sugar grams × 4

If that number is LESS than or equal to the serving size, the cereal meets the CACFP sugar limit.

Example:

Serving size: 30 g
Sugar: 6 g

6 × 4 = 24

✔ 24 ≤ 30 → CACFP allowable

---

# # # 🛒 Helpful Shortcut: WIC Cereal Lists

USDA guidance allows CACFP providers to use any state’s WIC-approved cereal list to help identify cereals that meet the CACFP sugar limit.

Because WIC cereals must meet the same sugar standard, these lists are a helpful starting point when shopping.

⚠️ Always double-check the Nutrition Facts label since manufacturers sometimes change recipes.

---

# # # 📋 We Made It Easier

To help providers shop faster, we created a list of cereals that may meet the CACFP sugar limit.

---

Because when it comes to CACFP…

Not all cereals are created equal. 😉

📢 Important Reminder for All Providers/Sites

To help ensure accurate CACFP documentation and smooth operations, our staff will be calling everyone to confirm your current meal times. Please be sure to answer or return our calls so we can verify that the information we have on file is correct.

🔔 Important Reminders:

✅ Meal Time Changes
Any changes to your meal times must be emailed to our office BEFORE the change takes place. Meal times cannot be updated after the fact.

✅ Closures or Early Closing
If you will be closing early, closed for a holiday, or not operating for any reason, it is your responsibility to notify us in advance. This helps us keep your records accurate and avoid compliance issues.

Your cooperation helps ensure that everyone stays in compliance with CACFP requirements. Thank you for your attention and for the great work you do for the children in your care! 👏

📢 CACFP Reminder for Day Care Homes & Day Care Centers

To ensure accurate CACFP meal claims and program compliance, all Day Care Homes (DCH) and Day Care Centers (DCC) must notify their sponsor when they will not be operating or when meal service will stop for the day.

✅ Planned Closures
If you know in advance that you will be closed (vacation, holiday, training day, etc.), please notify your sponsor at least 24 hours before the closure.

⚠️ Unexpected Closures or Early Closures
If an emergency occurs (illness, weather, family emergency, etc.) and you must close early, please notify your sponsor before the next scheduled meal service time whenever possible.

📌 Example:
If you served breakfast but must close before lunch, please notify your sponsor before lunch meal service begins.

📌 Examples when notification is required:
• Vacation or personal days
• Illness or family emergency
• Weather emergencies
• Licensing closures
• No children in care
• Closing early during the day

This helps ensure that CACFP meals are only claimed for meals that were actually served while the site was operating.

If you need to report a closure or have questions, please contact your CACFP sponsor as soon as possible.

⏰ CACFP Compliance Reminder for Providers!

Serving meals at the correct time is just as important as serving the right foods in the CACFP program! 🍎🥛

To make sure your meals are reimbursable, remember these key points:

✅ Meals must be served within your approved CACFP meal service times
✅ Children must be present and participating
✅ Meals must follow the CACFP meal pattern
✅ Meals must be eaten on-site

🍽 CACFP Meal Types May Include:
• Breakfast
• AM Snack
• Lunch
• PM Snack
• Supper (Dinner)
• Evening Snack

⚠️ CACFP Rule:
Only two meals and one snack OR one meal and two snacks per child per day may be claimed.

Children attending at different times of the day may be claimed for different meal combinations based on their attendance.

Our goal is to help providers stay compliant, confident, and successful while continuing to serve nutritious meals to children every day. ❤️
