All the world's a stage! Get ready for the spotlight with Performing Arts Camp, starting next Monday, June 8. Campers will work with trained professionals, including the Open Dance Project, to learn basics of performance arts and dance.

With school out and summer right around the corner, The Lighthouse of Houston is excited to announce our Youth Specialty Camps, all designed for blind and low vision youth and their siblings. Camps take place Monday through Wednesday, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Camp fees are $10 per week, and financial assistance is available.

Running from June through July, our camps offer something for everyone. Whether performing on the stage, going mad with science during STEAM week, leveling up with accessible video games, learning about podcasting, hitting the field for sports, or learning essential life skills in our Shine & Dine camp, we have it all!

Each camp is crafted to help youth learn, grow, and gain confidence in a supportive, inclusive environment, all while having an absolute blast. Spots fill up fast, so now’s the time to check out the full schedule and register for a summer of discovery, creativity, and fun!

Today, June 4, 2026, is World Day for Assistive Technology.

Assistive technology changes lives. These innovations help people learn, work, and live independently every day.

Access to assistive technology is a right. Yet millions of people around the world still don’t have access to the tools they need.

When people have access to assistive technology, it means access to education, employment, and independence.

Let’s raise awareness, take action, and help create a world where everyone has the tools they need to thrive.

“I just finished climbing Mount Kilimanjaro again for the second time.”

Back in 2015, Lonnie Bedwell was supposed to climb with Aaron, a veteran who lost his eyesight in Afghanistan. But weeks before the climb, Aaron developed spinal meningitis, leaving him totally blind and totally deaf. After receiving a cochlear implant that restored partial hearing, Aaron told Lonnie he wanted to try again, and they reached the summit together.

In this week's episode of Sightless Voices: Unleashing Potential Jennifer sits down with blind adventurer Navy veteran, and single father Lonnie Bedwell, a man who rebuilt his life from the ground up after losing his eyesight in a 1997 hunting accident. His story stretches from solo parenting after sudden blindness to becoming a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. He’s kayaked the Grand Canyon blind. He’s climbed mountains around the world. And he says he “lost eyesight and gained vision.”

With summer right around the corner, fireworks begin to make their way into the hands of Americans.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Americans spend millions of dollars on fireworks every year, and those same fireworks cause over 9,000 injuries annually. Most firework-related injuries occur in June and July.

One of our tips for this Fireworks Eye Safety Month is to leave the fireworks to the professionals. Attending public displays, instead of trying to set them off yourself, is a great way to ensure you and your eyes are protected and safe.

Stay tuned for more firework safety tips and reminders!
