The Texas Legislative HBCU Caucus stands firmly in defense of our Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Recent reports out of South Carolina are deeply troubling. The idea that an HBCU could face defunding simply for making a decision rooted in student safety and campus judgment is not just unacceptable, it is dangerous.

HBCUs have always been pillars of opportunity, resilience, and excellence. They were built in the face of exclusion, sustained through generations of struggle, and continue to produce leaders who move this country forward. Attempts to threaten their funding for political reasons undermine not only these institutions, but the very principles of fairness and educational access.

Let me be clear. HBCUs are not bargaining chips. They are not political leverage. They are essential institutions that deserve protection, investment, and respect.

When one HBCU is targeted, all of us must respond. We will not stand by while institutions that serve our communities are threatened for exercising their autonomy and prioritizing their students.

Now is the time for unity. Now is the time for leadership. Now is the time to ensure that our HBCUs are strengthened, not weakened.

We stand with South Carolina State University. We stand with every HBCU. And we will continue to advocate, organize, and speak out to protect the future of these institutions and the students they serve.

Pamela Evette said Thursday she’s “not a vindictive person.” But she’s gotten behind a push by some lawmakers to eliminate South Carolina State University’s funding.

The Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus is closely watching developments surrounding Kentucky State University, where proposed legislation could significantly reshape the structure, academic programs, and governance of a historic HBCU. While framed as a pathway to stability and workforce alignment, the proposal has raised important questions about preserving institutional identity, access, and the full mission of historically Black colleges and universities.

HBCUs are more than institutions, they are pillars of opportunity, culture, and generational impact. As conversations continue across the country, we remain committed to protecting the legacy, autonomy, and future of HBCUs while supporting thoughtful innovation that strengthens, not diminishes, their mission.

The Kentucky State polytechnic bill would reshape Kentucky State University through academic limits, new admissions standards, financial oversight, and expanded executive power.

Took a trip to Dallas to speak with Texas HBCU students in my role as Executive Director of the Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus. It is always an honor to pour into the next generation of leaders, change agents, and future policymakers who will shape the direction of our communities, our state, and this nation.

Our HBCUs have always been the heartbeat of excellence, resilience, and opportunity. Being in that space reminded me why this work matters so deeply. We are not just building programs, we are building pipelines of power, purpose, and progress for generations to come.

To every student in the room, your voice matters, your presence matters, and your future is limitless. Stay focused, stay hungry, and never forget that you belong in every space you step into.

Shout out to Pharaoh Clark for driving from San Antonio to Dallas to pour into the next generation!

The Texas HBCU Legislative Caucus stands firmly with the students of Florida A&M University and every HBCU across this nation who refuse to let our identity be erased. The word Black is not controversial it is powerful, historic, and foundational to the very institutions that were built to educate and uplift our communities. Black History is American History and we will never apologize for saying it out loud.

For generations, Texas HBCUs have done more with less, educating students who were too often overlooked and underestimated.

They didn’t wait for perfect conditions.
They showed up anyway.

Supporting our HBCUs helps ensure students don’t have to choose between textbooks and basic needs, and that opportunity remains open across Texas.

Every $1 helps.
Every $5 helps.
Every $10 helps.

Because when people show up together, it adds up.

If you believe education can change a life and open doors, this is one way to support that mission.
