Grill safely by keeping your barbecue at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
Always keep the lid open when lighting a gas grill, establish a 3-foot "kid-free" zone, and never leave the hot grill unattended.
Go Outdoors:
Never use a grill, fire pit, or smoker inside your home, garage, tent, or any enclosed space due to deadly carbon monoxide risks.
Clear the Zone:
Place your grill on a level, sturdy surface far away from anything that can burn, including lawn games and patio umbrellas.
Gas (Propane) SafetyOpen the Lid:
Always keep your gas grill lid open before attempting to light it to prevent gas from building up.
Perform the Bubble Test:
Before your first cookout of the season, check the gas hose for leaks. Apply a mixture of soap and water to the hose and connections; if bubbles grow, you have a leak that needs to be professionally repaired.
Smelling Gas?
If you smell gas while cooking, turn off the grill and the propane tank immediately. Do not move the grill, and step away to call the fire department.
Charcoal and Lighter FluidFluid Rules:
Use only charcoal starter fluid. Never use gasoline, kerosene, or other highly volatile liquids.
Don't Over-soak:
Never add starter fluid to coals that are already hot or warm—it can cause dangerous flare-ups.
Safe Disposal:
Let coals cool completely before disposing of them in a covered metal container.
Maintenance and HabitsGrease Control:
Clean grease traps and grates regularly. A significant portion of grill fires are caused by neglected grease buildup.
Have Backup:
Dress Keep an operational fire extinguisher or a garden hose on hand at all times.
