128 years ago, on 28 May 1898, the Philippine flag flew for the very first time — not in a ceremony, but in the fire of battle. The victory at Alapan was not just a military win. It was the moment our flag meant something — earned in battle, not bestowed.

From that battlefield in Cavite to the declaration of independence in Kawit on 12 June — 15 days that took a nation from its first victory to its first act of freedom.

During Flag Days, we do not just display our colors. We remember what they cost.

Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.🇵🇭

The Gawad Kalinga (GK) USA community came together for its 17th Annual GK Hope Ball, a Flores de Mayo fundraising celebration held at the Hyatt Regency Houston West. Hosted by GK Houston, the evening was a joyful celebration of GK’s enduring mission — honoring the communities uplifted, the students reached through SEED Philippines, and the partners and donors whose generosity has made it all possible.

Representing the Philippine Consulate General, Vice Consul Tanya Gaurano underscored Gawad Kalinga’s role in nation-building — that GK is more than a builder of homes, but a bearer of hope and a beacon of faith in what Filipinos can build for one another.

For over a decade, GK Houston has served as a steadfast bridge between the Filipino-American community in Texas and vulnerable communities in the Philippines — channeling the spirit of bayanihan into tangible change: safe homes, quality education through SEED Philippines, and restored dignity for the country’s most marginalized sectors.

The Philippine Consulate General in Houston joined a gala of the Philippine Nurses Association of Metro Houston (PNAMH) and the PNAMH Foundation, for the conferment of the Outstanding Filipino Nurse and Heart of Nursing Awards as well as the induction of the new PNAMH Executive Board to be led by President Alex Sardual.

Consul General Gunther Sales delivered remarks and officiated the induction. Drawing on the evening’s Ilustrado Inspired theme, he cast Filipino nurses as the ilustrados of their generation — trained, disciplined professionals who exercise knowledge with conscience as a form of service to the nation. In Houston, home to the world’s largest medical complex, he also said that Filipino nurses are not at the margins of American healthcare, but at its center.

Invoking malasakit — the instinct, he said, to treat the patient before you as if they were your own kin — as the defining quality of Filipino nursing, Consul General Sales added: “The Philippines is not a place we leave. It is a place we carry.” Every prayer murmured in Filipino at a patient’s bedside and every unhurried voice giving comfort and solace to a patient in need, he stated, is a form of diplomacy no Filipino diplomat can match.

Consul General Sales also spoke on the Consulate’s continuing pursuit of structured cooperation between the nursing education systems of the Philippines and Texas, so that the depth of expertise that defines the nursing field may regularly flow in both directions.

Marking eight decades of diplomatic relations, the Philippines–US alliance has grown into far more than a security pact — it’s a dynamic partnership shaping economic integration and regional stability across the Indo-Pacific. In “Eighty Years Strong,” Derek Grossman traces how the relationship has evolved from its mutual defense foundations into ambitious new initiatives like the Luzon Economic Corridor and the emerging “Pax Silica,” highlighting the two nations’ shared role in anchoring regional security alongside economic resilience and sustainable development.

Released for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, this commemorative piece offers a fresh look at how the alliance has evolved — and where it’s headed next. Read it here -

Consul General Gunther Sales served as a panelist at “Dialogue with Diplomats: The Role of Modern Diplomacy,” held on 28 April 2026 at the Ismaili Center in Houston.

Spearheaded by the Consular Corps of Houston under the leadership of Dean Kai Hennig and Executive Chief of Staff Marty McVey, in partnership with the UN Association-USA Houston Chapter, the forum gathered nearly 300 guests, including Houston Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Al-Karim Alidina, President of the Ismaili Council for USA, and other city representatives and civic leaders.

Joining Consul General Sales on the panel were Consul General Anna Hammarlund Blixt of Sweden, Consul General Breno Dias da Costa of Brazil, and Honorary Consul of Tunisia Adel Chaouch.

In his remarks, Consul General Sales spoke to the principles and values that anchor Philippine foreign policy — the firm assertion of the country’s sovereign rights, advanced through a steadfast commitment to open dialogue, the patient pursuit of shared interests, and peaceful resolution at all times — and reaffirmed the Philippines’ enduring resolve to promote and protect the welfare and interests of the Filipino people.

In celebration of Filipino Food Month (FFM) 2026, the Philippine Consulate General joined the “International Cuisine Festival” organized by the Consular League of Houston on 23 April 2026 — hosted by Tramontina at its U.S. headquarters in Sugar Land, Texas — alongside other countries, including: Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, France, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, and Ukraine.

The festival offered a meaningful opportunity to showcase Filipino cuisine to a diverse international audience right here in the Houston area. At the Philippine booth, guests savored two of the country’s most beloved dishes — chicken adobo and (vegetable) lumpia — brought to life through a live cooking demonstration by Ms. Raquel Harris of Blazian Bites, who presented the warmth, depth, and distinct character of Filipino flavors. Complementing the spread was a refreshing selection of homegrown fruit juices — mango, calamansi (Filipino lemonade), guava, pineapple, and guyabano.

The Consulate was likewise honored to meet Sugar Land Mayor Carol McCutcheon, who graced the event and engaged with participating countries in a warm show of support for the region’s vibrant international community.

More than a culinary showcase, the Consulate’s participation also echoed the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship and this year’s FFM theme, “Connected by Taste: The Filipino Food in the Flavors of ASEAN” — affirming Filipino cuisine as a cultural hallmark and deepening appreciation for its place on the global table.
