Did you know that exterior secondary windows can extend the lifespan of insulating glass units (IGUs) by up to 3x?

At INOVUES, we assess each building before recommending one of our interior or exterior retrofit systems as a non-invasive facade/window upgrade solution. In some cases, adding an exterior secondary glazing could be better or more appropriate than an interior window insert, and vice versa.

For example, one of the benefits of using our insulating glass retrofit (IGR) system as an exterior attachment over double-pane windows is improving their internal condensation/fogging resistance by up to 280%. Here's how:

By turning double-pane IGUs into triple-pane glazing and creating a new insulating weather barrier in front of the existing windows, our IGRs increase the IGUs' Condensation Index (CI) from 30 to 84 (per NFRC on a scale from 0 to 100 -- see the attached diagram).

We validated this at one of our projects last winter, where ~20% of the non-retrofitted IGUs fogged and needed to be replaced, while none of the retrofitted IGUs did.

Interestingly, if the same IGR system were used as an interior secondary window, the CI would not improve. In fact, it would decrease slightly, from 30 to 28, as shown in the diagram.

This is especially important for buildings that have double-pane windows that are near the end of their 20-30-year lifespan (about 30% of all buildings). An exterior IGR retrofit can extend their lifespan potentially by up to 60 years, avoiding costly replacements.

Many government buildings in Washington, DC, still rely on energy-wasting single-pane windows, significantly contributing to the recently reported $15.7 billion spent annually to maintain federal office buildings, regardless of their occupancy levels.

With growing interest in finding cost-cutting opportunities to reduce government spending, energy conservation measures (ECMs) like secondary windows provide a cost-effective solution to drastically cut the waste associated with heating and cooling these federal buildings.

The attached photos show an example of INOVUES' secondary window retrofits (SWRs) recently installed in a government headquarters in Washington, DC. This non-invasive retrofit transformed the existing single-glazed windows into triple-glazed systems, improving their insulating value by over 300% -- all without removal or replacement.

We’re excited to announce the successful completion of a school retrofit project that utilized our non-invasive facade and window upgrade systems!

Many schools, even in cold climates, still have poor-performing single-pane windows, simply because window replacement is not cost-effective.

Secondary windows can solve this problem!

This winter, we've helped transform the only elementary school in Arcadia, Wisconsin, into a more energy-efficient, sustainable, and thermally comfortable environment for its students and staff for less than 25% of the quote the school received for window replacement.

With outside temperatures currently dropping below freezing, we're particularly proud that we've helped make the classrooms, where children spend most of their day, a place where they can learn and thrive in comfort.

This project was especially exciting because it showcased the versatility of our solutions, making it possible to retrofit a school originally constructed in 1914 and has undergone several additions and renovations over the years.

The project utilized both our and systems as interior and exterior retrofits on fixed and operable windows (maintaining their functionality), along with over-cladding the spandrel panels. This significantly enhanced insulation and reduced air infiltration while also giving the existing window walls a refreshed appearance.

All of this was done without removing or replacing the original glass or existing window frames and without disrupting the school schedule.

Many thanks to MomentumGlass, ECM Holding Group, Inc., and Upper 90.

Stay tuned for more details and other exciting updates!

"Buildings are bad news for the climate -- but they don't have to be. While our structures are currently responsible for a third of global energy consumption and emissions, a future where they create more energy than they consume is possible. Energy policy analyst Ksenia Petrichenko has a three-tiered strategy for thinking differently about buildings, transforming them from passive users to active players in the energy system and bringing us closer to our climate targets."
