Today, members of the Westfield Fire Department had the solemn honor of joining our brothers and sisters in the fire service as we laid Captain Jesus Castillo of Porter Fire Department | Montgomery County ESD #6 to rest.

The fire service is more than a profession, it is a family. When one of our own is lost, departments and communities come together to honor the life, service, and sacrifice of our fallen brother.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Captain Castillo’s family, the members of Porter Fire Department, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Westfield Fire Department along with mutual aid from Eastex Fire Department responded to a wildland fire located between Brookside Cemetery and the Fairgreen Subdivision. The fire was determined to have been caused by a lightning strike that ignited a tree and burned deep into its root system, resulting in persistent underground smoldering.

Due to the fire’s proximity to the Fairgreen Subdivision and the potential for further spread, Westfield Fire Department requested assistance from the Texas A&M Forest Service A dozer was utilized to establish a fire line around the affected area, helping contain the fire and prevent it from spreading toward nearby properties.

After coordinating with the Texas A&M Forest Service and confirming that the fire was contained within the established fire line, the remaining smoldering material was allowed to safely burn itself out over the following days.

Crews continued to monitor conditions to ensure the fire remained contained and posed no threat to the surrounding community.

No injuries were reported.

Westfield Fire Department appreciates the assistance and coordination of the Texas A&M Forest Service in helping bring this incident to a safe conclusion.

Westfield Fire Department provided mutual aid to the Harris County ESD 17 - Little York Fire Department for a reported structure fire in the 620 block of Gulf Bank Road.

Westfield firefighters were first to arrive, encountering three mobile homes fully involved in fire. Firefighters immediately initiated suppression operations while working to protect surrounding exposures and prevent further extension.

With no fire hydrants available in the area, establishing and maintaining a continuous water supply became a significant challenge. Tanker shuttle operations were utilized to sustain firefighting efforts, with water supply periodically interrupted due to the extended distance tankers were required to travel to reach a refill point.

Despite the difficult fire conditions and limited water supply, crews from Westfield, Little York, and assisting agencies worked together to bring the incident under control.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Harris County Fire Marshal

Westfield Fire Department, with mutual aid from Eastex Fire Department and Ponderosa Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at The Home Depot near the Eastex Freeway and Little York Road. Employees safely evacuated before firefighters arrived and found smoke throughout the approximately 130,000-square-foot store. Firefighters traced the fire to a trash compactor, which employees assisted in removing from the building with a forklift before firefighters extinguished the burning contents. Due to the large amount of smoke inside the store, Ponderosa Fire Department’s Fan 62, a specialized Leader Easy 3000 trailer-mounted, large-flow ventilation fan, was requested to help rapidly ventilate the massive building.

The Harris County Fire Marshal determined that discarded LED lights with lithium batteries had been crushed inside the compactor, causing a chemical reaction that ignited the trash and sent smoke into the store. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and after approximately three hours of fire suppression, ventilation, and investigation, the store was able to return to service. A great example of mutual aid and specialized resources working together when it matters most.

Since 1942, this department has stood as the backbone of Houston’s Northside. From Lauder Road to Little York Road, from the Hardy Toll Road to the Eastex Freeway, this is our ground. Our responsibility. Our commitment.

Generations have come and gone, but the mission has never changed. We inherited a legacy built by firefighters who charged through smoke, heat, and uncertainty without hesitation. They didn’t build this department with words, they built it with grit, sacrifice, and action.

Today, we carry that same standard.

We train harder. We move faster. We fight fire aggressively. We don’t chase comfort, we chase the job. Every alarm is another opportunity to honor the badge and the men who wore it before us.

Westfield Fire Department was proud to attend and support the 5 de Mayo Festival in East Aldine, celebrating community, culture, and connection.

It was a great evening spent alongside residents enjoying live music, excellent food, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
