Here are a few heating safety tips provided to you for the upcoming freezing temperatures Mississippi is faced with this holiday weekend.

A period of dangerously cold weather is expected from Thursday night through Saturday night for our forecast area. Low temperatures will likely range from the single digits north to teens south, and highs will be near or below freezing. In addition, strong and gusty winds ushering in the cold will likely result in wind chill readings below zero in the significant threat area, especially from late Thursday night through Friday. Hypothermia will be likely with prolonged exposure, and exposed pipes could be damaged. Water main breaks will be possible, especially in the significant threat area. With this being a busy week of travel and holiday preparations, please monitor the latest forecast updates and prepare for this anticipated cold weather episode. Be sure family and neighbors have a warm place to stay.

Please take the time to make preparations for the extreme cold that is coming Thursday. Make sure pipes are wrapped, outdoor pets have extra bedding to keep warm, and you have extra cold gear if you’re going to be outside. Also we usually see an increase in structure fires so please make sure to check batteries in your smoke detectors & Carbon Monoxide detectors. Also now is the time to develop and/or practice your evacuation plan and meeting place in the event of a structure fire.

In addition to low temperatures falling between 10 to 20 degrees Thursday night through Saturday night, there is a high likelihood (70-90% chance) that all locations in our forecast area see high temperatures remain at or below freezing (32 degrees) Friday afternoon. As seen here, there is a 50/50 chance that temperatures in the Columbus, MS area could remain below 22 that day! Cold temperatures are likely to continue into Saturday. Make preparations to your home before leaving town, and be sure your family and neighbors have a warm place to stay this week.
