Today marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001, tragedy, a day that forever changed our nation.

The City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods joins communities across the country in remembering the lives lost, honoring the courage of first responders and recognizing the countless acts of service, sacrifice and compassion that followed.

As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, we are reminded of the strength that comes from standing together and supporting one another.

September is National Preparedness Month—a reminder that preparation today can make a difference when an emergency happens.

Take time to:

• Create or review your household emergency plan
• Build an emergency supply kit
• Sign up for local emergency alerts
• Plan for children, older adults, pets and individuals with disabilities
• Know your evacuation routes

Prepared communities are stronger communities.

Discover Houston City Hall!

Go behind the scenes of local government with a free guided tour of Houston City Hall. Explore the historic Art Deco rotunda, visit Council Chambers, sit in the chairs representing Houston residents and walk through the tunnel system.

Tours are offered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and are approximately 90 minutes. Groups must include 5–20 participants, and the suggested minimum age is 10. Please note that the tour is walking intensive.

Reservations close at noon three weeks before each tour date and are subject to minimum enrollment. Accessibility accommodations and other special requests should be submitted when making your reservation.

Preparedness strengthens our communities!

The Department of Neighborhoods’ Volunteer Initiatives Program recently joined the Blue Star Mothers at the American Legion Hall for a hurricane disaster preparedness presentation.

Participants received important hurricane safety tips, learned how to volunteer with the City of Houston during disaster recovery efforts, and received disaster preparedness guides from the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management.

We thank the Blue Star Mothers and the City of Houston Office of Veterans and Military Affairs for inviting us to participate in their monthly meeting and helping our community stay prepared, informed and ready to serve.

This week, we had the honor of accompanying Dr. Jones of the Office of Veterans and Military Affairs to the Houston VA Regional Office, where she delivered an inspiring presentation recognizing the service and contributions of women in the military in observance of Women’s Equality Day.

Following the presentation, we toured the VA Community Resource and Referral Center, a facility connecting Veterans with housing assistance, supportive services and other essential resources.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the dedicated organizations working to support Houston’s Veteran community.
