🌺Happy National Hummingbird Day!🌺
These tiny birds may be small, but they are incredible athletes! Hummingbirds can hover in place, fly backward and forward, and beat their wings dozens of times per second.
A few more fascinating hummingbird facts:
• Their hearts can beat over a thousand times per minute during flight.
• They rely on nectar from flowers for energy, while also eating tiny insects for protein.
• Their feathers can shimmer and appear to change color depending on the light.
• Hummingbirds are important pollinators, helping move pollen from flower to flower as they feed.
If you spot a hummingbird in your yard, planting native, nectar-producing flowers and providing a safe habitat can help support these remarkable visitors. 💚

🐿️ Squirrel season has arrived! As baby squirrels begin making their appearance, our Wildlife Center is preparing to care for young, orphaned, and injured squirrels in need. If you find a baby squirrel, please resist the urge to feed them. Although they may look hungry or helpless, providing the wrong food or attempting to care for them at home can cause serious health complications. Instead, keep the squirrel warm and safe, and bring them directly to our Wildlife Center. Our trained wildlife team can provide the specialized nutrition, medical treatment, and care they need to grow strong and, when ready, return to the wild.
If you find a baby squirrel in need, the best thing you can do is get them into professional care as soon as possible. 💚🐿️

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Stan 🌟

For the past eight years, Stan has brought his love for animals 🐾, his sense of humor 😄, and his welcoming personality to the Houston SPCA. Wildlife staff describe him as always positive and encouraging, quick with a joke, and ready to welcome new volunteers to the team. 🤝

Stan’s passion for animals and veterinary work began long before he started volunteering. Although he initially loved working with small dogs 🐶, his interest soon expanded to wildlife. 🐿️🦉 A few months after he began volunteering, Stan started helping feed squirrels and discovered just how much he enjoyed caring for the wide variety of animals and birds that come through the Wildlife Center.

Stan remained a dedicated volunteer even throughout the challenges of COVID, continuing to give his time to animals in need. ❤️ When asked about his favorite part of volunteering, Stan says it is the people he works alongside, the animals he gets to help 🐾, and seeing how beautifully the program is managed.

Thank you, Stan, for eight years of dedication, laughter, encouragement, and compassion for the animals in our care! 💙👏

A flash of blue across a field or backyard may be an Eastern bluebird! 💙

These beautiful songbirds are common throughout Texas and can often be found in open woodlands, fields, and gardens. Their brilliant blue coloring doesn’t actually come from blue pigment; it comes from the way light interacts with the structure of their feathers! ✨

Bluebirds primarily eat insects, berries, and small fruits, and they often nest in tree cavities or nest boxes. Fun fact: They’re skilled hunters that will perch low to the ground before swooping down to catch insects! 🐛

Meet the yellow-billed cuckoo! This elusive bird is often heard before it is seen, thanks to its distinctive series of hollow "cuk-cuk-cuk" calls echoing through forests and wooded areas. Yellow-billed cuckoos are skilled hunters with a surprising favorite food: caterpillars! They are one of the few birds that readily eat hairy caterpillars, helping keep insect populations in balance. During migration and nesting season, these remarkable birds rely on healthy habitats to find the food and shelter they need.

Every rescue has a story, and this Texas river cooter has already overcome quite the challenge. She arrived at our Wildlife Center with a fish hook lodged in her eye. 🎣 After our veterinary team carefully removed the hook, she has been closely monitored throughout her recovery, and we're thrilled to share that she's healing remarkably well.

🐢 Wildlife Fact: Female Texas river cooters can often be identified by their shorter front claws, while males have noticeably longer nails. Thanks to the dedicated care of our team, this resilient turtle is well on her way to returning to the waterways where she belongs. 🌿

🦆💛 Each spring and summer, our Wildlife Center cares for young ducklings that have been injured, orphaned, or separated from their families. These fast-growing birds require specialized nutrition and species-specific care as they develop the waterproof feathers and strength they'll need to thrive on their own.

🌿 As more ducklings begin arriving in our care, our team is hard at work giving each one the best chance at a successful return to the wild. Every duckling's journey is unique, and we're honored to help them take their next steps back to nature. 💚
