Justice for this mother and her son.

On March 24, 2025, Brittany Munive, 33, and her son, DJ, 9, were killed when Michael Arguijo, who was driving a red Ford F-150, crashed head-on into the Munive family’s Mitsubishi.

Also in the SUV: Brittany's husband and their 10-year-old daughter, Mila, were both seriously hurt. Brittany’s husband survived. Mila was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Early that morning, the Munives had been on the way back from Dallas after Mila's weekend softball tournament—her team won the championship. They were less than 20 miles from home, headed down I-45, when Arguijo hit their SUV. Prosecutors proved his blood alcohol content was 0.137, more than twice the legal limit.

Today, a judge sentenced Michael Arguijo to a total of 30 years in prison. Part of that punishment is stacked. For context: that ruling isn’t routine. It’s a deliberate choice. It means Arguijo will serve one sentence after the other: sentenced to 20 years for DJ’s death and 10 years for Brittany’s death (intoxication manslaughter).

In addition, the judge sentenced Arguijo to 20 years for injuring Mila (Injury to a Child). That sentence will run concurrently.

What’s our purpose? Third Ward residents, community leaders, stakeholders: bring us your concerns.

Homicides have declined across much of Harris County. But in Third Ward? The data tells a different story.

And we’ve seen Third Ward residents publicly state: they feel their community has been “forgotten” and “overlooked.”

We can’t accept that.

Let’s talk.

TUESDAY: come with your ideas for *violence prevention programs and services* — ideas the DA’s Office can support and help build into something long term.

Justice for Kalani, a seven-month-old infant murdered in 2022.

On November 4 of that year, Xavier Henderson was watching Kalani, the daughter of his girlfriend at the time, while the infant's mother was out running errands. Prosecutors proved to a jury Henderson injured Kalani so severely, he ultimately killed this little girl. Kalani didn't have to die. This violence never should have happened.

Henderson has been found guilty of murder. It took the jury less than 30 minutes to sentence him to life in prison.

Kalani’s loved ones celebrated the child’s life this weekend, releasing butterflies memorializing her. This little girl's story is a heartbreaking reminder of what our prosecutors do every day, how they fight to protect those most vulnerable--our children.

“…This country needs you.

We need people to choose service over status. We need people who believe all problems are solvable. We need people who understand that democracy is not self-sustaining. It survives because ordinary people CHOOSE to participate in it. Because democracy is not only defended in elections.

This is the work you are inheriting now.

We need you.

And despite all the noise around us, I look at you, and I am optimistic…

because I’ve seen the compassion in your generation. Your intelligence. Your willingness to ask the tough questions. The way you hold my generation accountable—frankly, we need it.

The future of this country depends on people willing to make sacrifices for the good of all of us as a whole. People exactly like you.

So, graduates, congratulations.

Houston needs you.
Texas needs you.
Your country needs you.

If there’s one thing this University of Houston alum can tell you with confidence, it’s this: the work ahead will not always be easy. But it will always matter.”

When prosecutors and police work together, we see how crime survivors can feel SEEN, how our neighborhoods can be safer. Numbers show…

Homicides – down.
S*xual Assaults – down.
Robberies – down.
Aggravated Assaults – down.

Don’t take our word for it…here’s the data from Police Chiefs across the U.S. and Canada (Major Cities Chiefs Association).

During (May 11-17), we’re showing you how partnering with law enforcement strengthens public safety. ⬆️

Thank you today and every day to the officers protecting us, for their courage and relentless work. We reaffirm our promise to seek fairness and hold violent offenders accountable. We honor those who gave their lives and stand with their families—especially this Friday, Peace Officers Memorial Day.

So, we'll see y'all this Saturday.

Justice for this child survivor—whose identity the HCDAO protects. She told a jury she was only 10 when this defendant started sexually abusing her.

Willie Washington has been found guilty of Continuous S*xual Assault of a Child and sentenced to life in prison.

The girl testified how Washington told her: they’d get in trouble and that would “break her mother’s heart” if the girl told anyone about what was happening.

HCDAO prosecutors Nevin Day and Mikeala Morris showed the jury how Washington’s grooming and emotional coercion perpetuated the abuse.

“Speak up for yourself, even when no one else does,” this child survivor chose to paint on her sign. It hangs among the other children's handprints who bravely shared their stories. You are loved. You matter. You have a voice.

“Healing by finding beauty in the broken.”

Two brave girls told a jury last week how Jamie Martinez sexually abused them for years while growing up. Martinez was found guilty of Continuous S*x Assault of a Child and sentenced to life in prison.

Justice for these two child survivors—whose identities this Office protects. After sharing their stories, the girls pressed their hands in paint and made their mark along our survivor wall.

What happened to them does not define them. That’s the message they paint. That’s what they now know:

“The handprint reflects the therapeutic power of finding hope, value, and beauty in the midst of desolation and trauma.”

May there be healing and resilience for all children who find themselves in this criminal justice world.
